Thank you for your service to our community as a Sheriff's Deputy, but also for the 23 years of service after you were injured. You shared your story of survival and overcoming obstacles, your faith in Christ, and your joy despite your circumstances. You never gave up! You finished strong and you taught others to fight. live, and overcome. You'll never be forgotten and you're legacy will live on in hearts and minds of those you have touched.

My husband and I met Mike at the walls of the National Memorial the year that Alan Albee (Burnett County Deputy killed in the same incident) was honored. Mike was there in uniform in his sip and puff wheelchair staring at the name on the wall. For those of you who have been at the Memorial and walked the walls before the ceremony, you know how crowded it is and how much sorrow is expressed. Imagine that sight of Mike in his large wheelchair unable to even wipe the tears streaming down his face.

What an honor to have come to know him as a good friend from that day forward. He always wondered why he, a young single man, was left behind and Alan Albee, who had a wife and two children, was called home on that dreadful day. With each day, Mike found answers to his wondering. He discovered his purpose, put meaningfulness into the senselessness, and followed the plans God had for him right to the end.

His funeral will be Saturday, April 19, 2014. It was 23 years ago on that morning that he was shot.

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother.

I am both a cop and chaplain and one of things we do as a ministry is to come alongside wounded officers here at Craig Hospital in Englewood (CO). Through that outreach I got to know Mike well and forged a friendship. Please know that even though Mike was paralyzed he represented the PCSO well and was a true inspiration to all. Because our brother knew Christ as his Lord and Savior, he is now forever free in paradise. I look forward to seeing him again when my time comes. Splendid behavior!

Deputy Sheriff Mike Severson,

When you made your decision to enter law enforcement many years ago you became blessed:

For the Lord said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." Matthew 5:9 ESV

When you and your partner, Deputy Sheriff Allen Albee, attempted to arrest a shooting suspect from another state back on April 19, 1991, nearly twenty-three years ago, you answered God's call to serve:

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." Isaiah 6:8 ESV

As a result, you were shot and subsequently died of your wounds on Monday, April 14, 2014. You sacrificed your life so that others might live and be protected. However, the Lord was not done with you at the time you were shot. For about twenty-three years thereafter, although paralyzed from the neck down, you ministered to others concerning your ordeal. Now, your work here is done and the Lord has called you home:

And the Lord said, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 ESV

I, along with your family, friends and comrades, will mourn your sacrifice and loss in the line of duty:

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4 ESV

Now go! Rise up! And do battle against evil as an angel for the Lord!

In God's merciful love,

Pastor Steven R. Closs
Retired Captain of Police, Nashua Police Department, Nashua, NH
