Master-at-Arms Mark Mayo,

When you made your decision to enter the United States Navy Security Forces some six years ago you became blessed:

For the Lord said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." Matthew 5:9 ESV

When you responded to the assistance of a Petty Officer on the quaterdeck of the USS Mahan (a destroyer) because an individual had breached security and was onboard on Monday, March 24, 2014, you answered God's call to serve:

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." Isaiah 6:8 ESV

As a result, you were shot and sacrificed your life so that others might live and be protected for God and country:

And the Lord said, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 ESV

I, along with your family, friends, comrades, and fellow Americans will mourn your sacrifice and loss in the line of duty:

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4 ESV

Now go! Rise up! And do battle against evil as an angel for the Lord!

In God's merciful love,

Pastor Steven R. Closs
Retired Captain of Police, Nashua Police Department, Nashua, NH

Rest easy brother, you have stood your watch with pride and professionalism. Go to the promised place where you can look down to see your brothers continue what you have started. Thank you for your service to this country and to your Navy. May the light of Christ ease the pain on the ones you have loved, and those who have loved you in return.
