The offender in this case just so happens to be very close to me. I have recently went on this dive about this case due to my own situation in life and relation with the offender. It is bitter yet beautiful looking at it from a retrospective, with how it has effected friends and family of Thomas and how the offenders mistake has changed his life exponentially causing him to be in and out of my life. Bitter yet beautiful.

I grew up in Beech Grove. I got to know Tom from working at Edward's Drive-in, and just being a teen-ager hanging out in the Grove. He will never know what a positive influence he was in my life. He loved his family. He was crazy about his wife. He told me stories of his brothers, and step kids, constantly. He looked out for me and my friends. He was a voice of reason and common sense. And, he cared enough to listen and be there. Most every night I saw his police car drive by my house. I knew I was protected. He was Tom the Cop to all the kids at Edwards. And, I'll never forget that with Tom, everything was "super great and getting better!" We lost a most honorable man that day. I will never forget him!

Tom was a good friend of mine. I can remember when I got the news of his accident & death. I am a retired officer from IPD so I know how much this hurt. He was a good person and a good police officer.

I just saw the link to this on facebook and it is strange, because just this past Saturday my husband and I were talking about him. I did not know him well at all, but many years ago, when our youngest daughter (who is now 35) was approximately 4 years old, we were in an accident in Beech Grove on 2nd and Churchman. Officer Kleis was the first officer on the scene. We were on our way to Riley Hospital for a very important doctor's appointment and our car was totaled. Thank God no one was hurt. Officer Kleis loaded us up in his police car and drove us to Riley Hospital so we wouldn't be late or miss the appointment. He was off duty at the time. I have never forgotten that, or his smile, and the calmness he brought to a very stressful situation. Sending prayers up for him and his family. He will never be forgotten. Our oldest daughter is now a police officer and we know all too well the sacrifices he made to protect mankind. Thank you for your service.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 21rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
I pray for the solace of all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.
Rest In Peace.

Tommy was like a Dad to me. One year he showed up at our house on Christmas morning dressed like Santa Claus! I miss his smile the most, it always made me feel safe and cherished.
