March 3 resonates with me for a few reasons but none greater than the loss of you John. What a good friend. Always had something good to say and even just a hello. You are my hero and your life touched many. 10 years ago seems like a lifetime. Such a deep loss.

I am a driving instructor, Officer Hobbs daughter was my student this past December. Today is January 2, 2024. Two months, two days, shy of a decade since the slaying of, by all accounts, a decent servant to the GOD, the community and his fellow man. Often times, my students will share moments from their lives that are treasured gems or deepest heartaches. They stay with me long after. I am grateful for such trust and offer my ear and heartfelt compassion. Teaching someone to drive can be very bonding and I value that experience and cherish it. Officer Hobbs, your daughter Cecilia is feisty, tenacious, stubborn and adorable. She needs to use her turn signal more often but is one smart cookie for sure. She exceeded her own expectations out on the road and quickly learned that she has good instincts and is capable of learning the fine art of defensive driving. You can be proud Sir, as no doubt you are. I used to live near the intersection where you lost your life. It is a rough area of town. You were bravely trying to make it safer and you accomplished your goal by taking out the criminal you were there to apprehend. Sadly you were killed in the process of doing so. RIP Officer Hobbs. Thank you for your service.

I knew John early on in my career when I was a boot and he was a veteran detective. We got to know each other and became friends. We both enjoyed martial arts and on occasion trained together. I was there when he was down and I was able to spend a few moments by his side. Not a days goes by that I don’t think about it. You will be missed brother.

I was in class 247 with John. We marched and sat near each other due to our last names. Very very very painful to read about this.

John and my Dad were on a squad together for years. My Dad wanted to buy me a rifle and “bought “ a rifle from John for me to have as a youth. John returned the money because he wanted me to have it and I will keep this rifle the rest of my life. We remember him every year. He’s a hero.

John I remember you and I working together in South Mountain Precinct. Always the professional and a true protector of the community. You did the heavy lifting and were a hero to the end and now serve as an inspiration to others. You set the example for all in LE, PPD, FAID and 400. Rest in peace my Brother, you are not forgotten.

Today I remember my friend and coworker. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of you and the effect you had on my family. I still have the picture of you riding your newly purchased motorcycle up I-17 and the smile on your face as you watched me snap it... You are missed my friend... Rest in Peace John!

It has been almost two years since you left. I remember your first day when you came to the FTO squad. Fresh out of the Academy and so anxious to learn, to do, to excel and be a great Phoenix cop. You did exactly that. Your enthusiasm, strength and courage were second only to your love of the job and tat was second only to your love of your family.
Rest in peace, my friend.
