For the first time I saw your dedication sign on Hwy 680. I was compelled to research the information regarding your EOW and it's circumstances. Painful...... But necessary, it keeps me in check as a human / citizen and that mistakes happen. Why that day and to you? Only God and you know. I want all to know how personally I am appreciative of the sacrifices you and your family, friends, coworkers have made...Before, during and the years after to come. Thank you for your service & sacrifice.

It's now 2 years since you were taken from your family, which includes the extended family in blue. We don't have to have met you to grieve, but we all know, it's those who knew and loved you most that feel the greatest pain. We pray for them as we honor you here. So long as they hold you close in their hearts and minds, you will never truly be gone.

The scum who murdered you will face true justice, if not in this life, then in the next. of that I am confident.

God Bless you and may your eternal rest be ever peaceful, Brother.

My condolences to Sgt. Smith's family, friends, and colleagues. As the anniversary of this tragic accident approaches, please reflect on God's promise concerning our loved ones who have fallen asleep in death. John 5:28,29 reads "do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." I pray these words bring comfort to all.

Tom, I think about you often. You were my partner years ago in our two week sergeants school. You BART me SFPD. It's been a year since you left, but 6 years since Sgt School, and your cell number is still in my phone! You were a bit of a dork, but a dork I would turn the sky a hail fire red for. I would back you up under ANY circumstance and be the first there. I wish I could tell your little girl what a good man her daddy was. I will find her. Jesus man, you were such a good dude!!!

Still hard to comprhend all that has taken place this past year. Just the other day, I watched a press interview you gave regarding a homicide case. I must have watched it 5 times. So surreal...miss you Tommy.

He went to work that day and did not know
This shift he served would bring such sorrow
This call to duty would be his last
His time on earth is now his past
God set this day as his time to go
Rest in peace Detective Sergeant Smith, now a hero
He gave the ultimate sacrifice
With integrity and pride he paid the price
His family, friends and colleagues will mourn
As an angel in heaven he is now reborn
His golden heart stopped beating
Hardworking hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the very best.

It's been over two months and my heart is heavy daily. I know that Tommy would not like to hear that but it is true. Tommy taught me how to be a CSO and to strive to better myself daily. He gave me opportunities when others would not. Unknowingly he had been a mentor to me for many years. I will never forget the years in Richmond being his and Boris's side kick. The laughs were just as many as the lessons I learned.
Kellie and Summer, you two are in my prayers and thoughts daily. I know your blessed with many who love and care for you......

Tommy I am very honored that the last 23 years I was your brother in law. I remember the first time we met, it was my 23rd birthday while I was at Sac State. I new that you were meant for my sister. Thank you for all you did for my sister and my parents over the years. Your are a wonderful man and a awesome brother to me. I will never forget our last beer with Steve, January 18th, 2014, at Maria, Maria. Love you buddy, R.I.P and watch over your two girls.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Tommy was accidently killed.

To the Smith family, fellow BART officers, and all who call Tommy beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

I attended your funeral, and was so moved by the words of all of those who eulogized you, especially your brother. Your entire family is dedicated to a life of service, and I think this gives them a better understanding of the tragic circumstances that have devastated so many.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Sgt. Tommy Smith gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 21, 2014.

Detective Sergeant Tommy Smith,

Alive and well in the arms of God.

To Your Family,

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray, “Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are Your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, loving family, friends, neighbors and caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name and for Your Glory, Amen.”

I have lifted you and your family to God every morning for over three years. Feel those prayers. God is with you, He knows and will ease your pain.
