"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Your work is done here on Earth - Heaven has called upon you today, leaving so many words left to say. But now it's too late, for your time has come, words unspoken; I am sure everybody has some. Regrets and wishes are probably there too, but lasting forever are memories of you.
There have been many times that we waved to each other, but we were there for each other in time of need. Now it's time for us to say Good-Bye, until we meet again in heaven to fly. Now go and Patrol the Heavens Above and Watch Below those you Love. Thank you for your service.

You have shown us more strength and courage and heroism than many of us will ever know. To put the lives of the pilots ahead of the pain you were no doubt in is to be respected and admired. I'm thankful you had two more years with your family rather than to be lost then and there. So long as you live in their hearts and minds, you will never truly be gone from those who love you most, but my heart goes out to the entire NYSP at the loss they have suffered.
God Bless and may you forever Rest in Peace, Brother.

For Trooper Winston Martindale:
The duties and the risks of the law-officer, in the course of his/her day, can be varied and many. All the training and preparation for life as a guardian & protector are no assurance that death or serious injury will not result while performing our duty. We regret that Winston is the most recent illustration of what any law-officer might encounter on any assignment. The lingering injury, and for a substantial period, only adds to the pain felt by those close to him.
We pray for Winston's family, friends, co-workers and all those who care about him. May they reach-out to one another in the days ahead.
We are proud to render Trooper Winston Martindale, a soldier-of-the-law, a final salute.
