Reflections for Sheriff Cody Don Carpenter

My sincere condolences to his family and colleagues. From Spain a fellow of the Guardia Civil.

Tú nos dijiste que la muerte
no es el final del camino,
que aunque morimos no somos,
carne de un ciego destino.

Tú nos hiciste, tuyos somos,
nuestro destino es vivir,
siendo felices contigo,
sin padecer ni morir.

Cuando la pena nos alcanza
por un compañero perdido,
cuando el adiós dolorido
busca en la Fe su esperanza.

En Tu palabra confiamos
con la certeza que Tú
ya le has devuelto a la vida,
ya le has llevado a la luz.
Ya le has devuelto a la vida,
ya le has llevado a la luz

Cuando, Señor, resucitaste,
todos vencimos contigo
nos regalaste la vida,
como en Betania al amigo.

Si caminamos a tu lado,
no va a faltarnos tu amor,
porque muriendo vivimos
vida más clara y mejor.

You told us that death
not the end of the road,
that although we are not die,
flesh of a blind fate.

You made us, we are yours,
our destiny is to live,
being happy with you,
without suffering or dying.

When the penalty reaches us
for a lost companion,
when the pain goodbye
searches Faith hope.

In Your word trust
with the certainty that you
and have you back to life,
and you've been light.
You've already brought back to life,
and you've been light

When, Lord, rose again,
beat you all
you gave us life,
as in Bethany's friend.

If we walk by your side,
will not fail us your love,
because dying live
clearer and better life.

To the family and friends of Sheriff Cody Carpenter and to his deputies:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Cody died trying to save others.

To Cody's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Sheriff Carpenter gave to his community and the citizens of Arkansas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 31, 2013.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Officer Campora,

You are alive and well in the presence of God.

To Your Family,

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray, “Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, family and loving, caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name, Amen”

I have lifted you and your family to God every morning for the past two years. Feel those prayers. God is with you, He knows and will ease your pain.

I will remember you. Another hero gone home to the Father. Let us not forget what this hero's sacrifice paid for these people, for all people, the right to live. The currency for that payment, was his own life, his blood. As the Bible said, greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for those he loves, and this sheriff proved it to the last.

It was an honor to personally know Joel Campora and work for Cody Carpenter. They both served with honor and they both led by example. They were the kind of men that made you want to be led by them. They would never ask their fellow man, be they officer or otherwise, to do anything that they were not willing to do themselves first. They were humble men who were of the people and served the Lord. During my first job interview with Cody he said "I don't want you to call me sheriff or Mr. Carpenter or Sheriff Carpenter or anything like that, I just want you to call me Cody". That is how Cody was. He had a special way of making everyone feel like they mattered to him whether he just met them or knew them for a lifetime. Cody and Joel both cared for everyone and tried to make a positive impact on the lives of the people that they met. I will forever mourn their deaths, celebrate their lives and do my best to honor the memories of these courageous men. Rest in peace my fallen brothers.
