R.I.P. Sheriff, may God look after you, your family, & your Deputies. There needs to be an immediate Congressional mandate that makes shooting any law enforcement officer the DEATH PENALTY! Regardless if the officer survives the attack. These criminals have shown that they could care less about us.

My friend Sheriff Eugene Crum was shot and killed today in his vehicle while conducting surveillance on a suspected pill house. The shooter exited his vehicle and approached Gene's cruiser and shot him at point blank range. The shooter fled the scene, traveling towards Delbarton. The shooter was pursued and he thereafter wrecked near Hell Creek. That's when the real shooting started. The suspect was shot and is presently in custody. Gene was a great man with a big heart. He was a police officer in Matewan and was later elected as Magistrate, a position in which he served for many years. After recently being elected Sheriff this year, he quickly began one of the largest drug sweeps in the county's history. Gene was my friend, my client, a husband, a father, a grandfather and one of the greatest men to ever serve as Sheriff in our county. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Today we lost one of the good guys.
