What a kind and wonderful person Gil was. I work as a prosecutor and I had the pleasure of working on cases with Gil for over a year and a half. He was an expert in his field and worked hard to make the prison a safer place. He also was a great father and he loved his family. May God bless them..

My condolences to the Cortez Family and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation during this impossibly hard time. The loss of any law enforcement officer is a serious blow to the community, the state, and the country as a whole. I will pray for all of the people who worked, knew, or was a family member or friend so that they can get through this stronger. God be with Sgt. Gilbert Cortez as he enters his final judgement with God. Due to his 20+ years of service I will add him to my list of heroes. Also I hope Mattie goes to doggy heaven! So sad. R.I.P. Gilbert Cortez.
