Reflections for Village Public Safety Officer Thomas O. Madole

"Mo chomhbhróin"

Officer Matt Lyons
Oceanside Police Department, California

April 23, 2013

To the family and friends of Officer Thomas Madole and his fellow officers:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Thomas was killed.

To Officer Madole's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Thomas Madole gave to his community and the citizens of Alaska, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 19, 2013.

Though I never knew him, he was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace through such incidents & He will judge the guilty. May family & friends feel the presence of the "God of All Comfort" as they endure the distressing days ahead. I join them in their agonizing grief & remember them in my prayers.

Another senseless tragedy
Another day of grief,
Another day of praying
To help us find relief.

Relief from bitter anguish
Relief from rage so great,
Relief from lenient justice
Which continues to seal our fate.

Relief from heartache’s torment
As we continue on,
Oh, the awesome loss of brotherhood
Now that you are gone.

Though our hearts are deeply broken
And our tears forever flow,
There’s a comforting assurance
That now with God you go.

We know that you are welcome
Now at Heaven’s gate,
While meeting brothers & sisters
Who also met such fate.

The family of Law Enforcement
Knows no distance here or there,
And we recall in comfort
You await us there.

Your work is done here on Earth - Heaven has called upon you today, leaving so many words left to say. But now it's too late, for your time has come, words unspoken; I am sure everybody has some. Regrets and wishes are probably there too, but lasting forever are memories of you.
There have been many times that we waved to each other, but we were there for each other in time of need. Now it's time for us to say Good-Bye, until we meet again in heaven to fly. Now go and Patrol the Heavens Above and Watch Below those you Love. Thank you for your service.

Tom was married to my wife's cousin. I met him twice at family gatherings while he was ministering and going on mission trips to Alaska. He was good man. His father-in-law is my father-in-law's brother. I've been in law enforcement in a big city for 34 years and had a couple of bruises and bumps. He goes up to Alaska and this happens. You just never know. Rest well, cousin. Everybody else, be safe.

Deepest sympathy for Officer T. Madole. Small villages are often extremely dangerous. We are often without backup or resources available to those in urban areas. It is also a very pure form of law enforcement. The close contact with the populace forms many bridges. Sadly it comes with many dangers as well; some forget that people will be people regardless of community size.
