Sergeant
LORAN "BUTCH" BAKER
Santa Cruz Police Department
WE ARE THE POLICE
We're always out there serving and protecting
We will never falter while we're on the watch
You're sleeping soundly the streets alive around you
We patrol our sectors, our beats both day and night
We are the Police..........We're watching over you
We are the Police..........Protecting is what we do
A call from dispatch says that help is needed
We responded code 3 just to get to you
Arriving on scene, suspect began too scream
I'm not going to jail tonight....not without a fight
We are the Police..........We're watching over you
We are the Police..........Protecting is what we do
Our badge is battered, the uniform is tattered
We give all we have to keep you safe this night
Battle was hard fought, we didn't give a second thought
Responding to a call for help is what we're all about
We are the Police..........We're watching over you
We are the Police..........Protecting is what we do
Some people say..............................We're insane
Some people call us..........................Foul names
But when you need help....................Who came
We are the Police..........We're watching over you
Our fallen heroes, are gone but not forgotten
Thin blue line of courage, forever standing true
So please don't hate us and try not to forsake us
We will give our all, to keep you from all harm
We are the Police..........We're watching over you
We are the Police..........Protecting is what we do

THANK YOU Butch for believing in my cadaver dog (Rachel) back in 1993 when you called me out to assist on the homicide in Pogonip Park. You told me (after Rachel found bone evidence and teeth) how impressed you were with her nose. In spite of my being a lowly (female) campus cop who'd been razzed and harassed by other K-9 cops, you're kindness and encouragement on that case gave me confidence in my work and in my vision to use search dogs and make a difference. I didn't know you that well, but it was very clear that you were loved and respected by your peers. May you rest in peace and may God grant your family the Peace that surpasses all understanding.

I was shocked to hear of the deaths of two of Santa Cruz's finest officers. I have always loved my frequent visits to Santa Cruz as a way of getting away from the stress of the real world, but unfortunately the real world has spilled over into this beautiful city by the sea.
I salute the two officers who lost their lives in trying to maintain the safety and dignity of a way of life that few have had the opportunity to enjoy. My God watch over these dedicated officers and bring peace to their families.
