Today is the 52nd anniversary of the death of Chapel Hill Police Detective Theodore Roosevelt Cole Jr. Telling his story ensures that he is not forgotten and that we continue to honor his sacrifice.
On June 4, 1969, Detective Cole was shot by a suspect he had arrested several times in the past. The suspect approached Cole while he was at home working in his yard and, without provocation, shot him twice. Detective Cole died soon after at the hospital. The suspect was charged and convicted of first-degree murder.
On the day Cole was killed, he was scheduled to be promoted to detective. Cole was posthumously promoted to that rank during the 2012 Orange County Peace Officer Memorial Service.
Rest easy, we have the watch.
