Reflections for Special Deputy Sheriff A. L. Smithers

I served 45 years in law enforcement including two four year terms as Sheriff of Luna County (2007-2011 & 2011-2014) retiring at the end of 2014. I prayed each day I would not have to face an EOW during my administration. I was blessed not having to endure it. My thoughts are always with my successors and all Emergency Responders whose service I appreciate. My Lord, Bless each and every law enforcement officer on whom we depend to keep us safe. Keep them safe.

You had the courage to place yourself between evil and the law abiding citizens you swore to protect, and for that I thank you. You have not been forgotten

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 102nd anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
