Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Agent James Jeffery Davies

How absolutely tragic this whole situation is. My deepest sympaties to all involved and all effected by this event. Officer Davies' family will never get him back physically and the loss is no doubt overwhelming. They shall be in my prayers.

In my prayers also will be the officer who mistakenly shot Officer Davies. He and his family must now endure the guilt and potential scorn from others. Please be kind and never forget the old line, "There but for the Grace of God, go I." The healing will take time and not be easy, but it must happen for all involved.

Officer Davies, you are a hero; may God bless you and may you forever Rest in Peace, Brother

I had the privilege of working with Jim for 5 years during my tenure with LPD. He was truly the kind of officer we should all strive to be. He had an infectious attitude toward work, his friends, and life in general. He was often the first to arrive for his shift, and the last to leave. He would often do more than his share to help his fellow officers complete their work, and ask for none of the glory when the back-patting began.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and my LPD brothers and sisters.

Your work is done here on Earth - Heaven has called upon you today, leaving so many words left to say. But now it's too late, for your time has come, words unspoken; I am sure everybody has some. Regrets and wishes are probably there too, but lasting forever are memories of you.
There have been many times that we waved to each other, but we were there for each other in time of need. Now it's time for us to say Good-Bye, until we meet again in heaven to fly. Now go and Patrol the Heavens Above and Watch Below those you Love. Thank you for your service.

I've had this poem posted up on my fridge since the day I graduated the Academy and hope that my wife and family would never have someone read it to them. I read it often to remind me of the reality of our Job and feel great emptiness as I re-type for Jim. As the tears cloud my eyes and I look over them to see the screen, I pray that Jim's family can somehow find the strength inside them to get through this time of pain. This horrible situation that has presented itself will be a true test, but we must all march on....

The Final Inspection

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulder and said,
"No Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us that carry badges can't always be a Saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here,
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand".
There was silence all around the throne,
Where Saints have often trod,
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.
"Step forward now policemen.
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk the beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell".

It cannot be more true that Heaven gained a hero on Friday. Officer Davies, may you rest in eternal peace and keep watch from above. Having had the opportunity to work in a volunteer capacity next to you over the past several summers at the Lakewood sobriety checkpoints, I can honestly say that I am honored to have met you. Your smile, good spirit, and jokes always made the hours pass more quickly, and your dedication, professionalism, and unselfishness will never be forgotten by those who knew you -- even in passing. You most surely will be missed by the citizens of Lakewood, your Brothers and Sisters of Lakewood PD, and it goes without saying, your family. THANK YOU for your service, protection, and selflessness over the past 6 years. My thoughts and prayers are with ALL of those at the Lakewood Police Department, but especially those involved in the incident. May you have the strength to overcome this tragedy, and move forward.

Countless times I've come back to this page, hoping it was gone. Countless times I've begun to write a reflection, only to stop because I didn't have the words necessary to honor you. The words I leave now still fall quite short, but I want to let all know the honor I have felt serving with and learning from you. RIP Brother. Please know I will continue the fight, and I will never forget you. Love you Brother!
