Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Arthur Lopez

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

In the world of civil services, there is no greater loss than a police officer doing what he promised he would do; protect and serve. Officer Lopez was serving his fellow citizens and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. He and all those who died before him in the line of duty did something many of us, myself included often take for granted. May this young man rest in peace forever and remain a lasting beacon of light to the community he served.

Citizen, Tom Tagliente (Florida)

I have laid down my life in service to all of you.
I have been a part of the fabric that has held the line between your safety and your victimization.
As I now become a part of the rich history of law enforcement, please remember me always for I have left behind those who loved and depended upon me.
I have given my life so that others may live in peace.
My partners and my agency, please remember my family, their loss, and don’t let time soften your compassion for them.
You guard the gate now and I will continue my watch from above.

MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND MAY YOUR FAMILY FIND COMFORT IN THE GOOD YOU HAVE DONE HERE ON EARTH.

I am a Sgt. with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Phoenix, AZ.

I am from Bellmore, Nassau County. I became a cop because of how I was treated by the Officers in Nassau County when I was a kid.

I had a flat tire on my bicycle in the mid 1970's on our way to Jones Beach. My friends left me there and went to the beach. I was miles from home.

A Nassau County Officer gave me and my bicycle a ride home. I will never forget that and it is my inspiration for becoming a COP. I try to pass that on as much as I can to the public and my Deputies so when kids grow up that can have the positve memories.

I hurt for Nassaus' losses.

My thoughts and prayers are with your families, your department and your community.

I have lost several friends in the line of duty from my agency and ones we work close with. It affects all of us. Some are just a little closer to home.

Thank you for your service and sacrafices.
