Reflections for Assistant Director Donald Boyd Smith

Hi daddy,
Today 51 years ago,is your hero date but it's also the date I never got to know you. You died in March, I was born in July. An ultimate sacrifice. Even still, I accept it and I couldn't be prouder. One day we will get to know each other. Until then ...

Hi daddy
In some weird way, I feel like this is the only portal of communication I have to you. I missed posting on your b-day July 2nd and your hero date Mar 29th,
So much has taken place this year but I remembered. Will never forget you. I'm so thankful for those brave men and women that continue to make sacrifices for our freedom and well being. Please watch over all of them. Now, more than ever, I pray for thier safety. To all LEO and Military men, women & families GOD BLESS & PROTECT YOU ALL.

Over the years, so many LOD deaths, including three of LEO's I knew personally. I don't write reflections as often as I would like to, just because there are so many who have given so much.

But when I read your Daughter's post after 47 years since your LODD, I wanted her to know that she is not the only one remembering your sacrifice. I hope she and all members of your family find some comfort in that.

RIP Brother

This was my Father. I was born July 17, 1070, when my father was killed March 29, 1970. I am very proud to know that my father and Mr. Rogers were such heros. He was in my thoughts on Memorial day, as he is every day. I often wonder what he was like and have many questions. My family is all gone now, with my brother Tony remaining, but will never be forgotten. I visited your picture, which hangs in the training academy at Smith State Prison and want you to know that I, and my 3 little boys, gave you a proper salute for being such a brave daddy and granddaddy. I love you with all my heart, even though I was robbed of the chance to know you. I know that you were a dedicated person to your community, and that's good enough for me. Your daughter, LaDonna

Asst. Dir. Smith,
Sir, it has taken over 42 years but you and your fellow officer are finally being honored. I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as a LEO-but for our Country as well when you served in the USAF. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
