Reflections for Probation / Parole Officer Jeffery Matthew McCoy

My thoughts and prayers are with Jeff's family. I had the pleasure of serving in the military with Jeff and we also roommates for a couple of years. He was a great guy and will truly be missed. I pray that his family finds peace in knowing how loved and respected he was. Rest in peace, Brother.

Everyone in this line of work believes we will go home at the end of our shift. Everyone knows that this may not be the case or our reality. That is a truth we accept, that is a truth we do all that is possible to avoid and that is a truth we carry with us each day.
I pray for solace for your family - especially your wife and children as this is the truth they must now live.
Your sacrifice is shouldered by all your brothers and sisters in uniform and your life and contributions to this world will be forever remembered. May we do our duty and live our lives in your honor.
Thank you sir - and your watch is left in good hands.

A PSALM OF LIFE by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

TELL me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream ! —
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real ! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal ;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way ;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
Be a hero in the strife !

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant !
Let the dead Past bury its dead !
Act,— act in the living Present !
Heart within, and God o'erhead !

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate ;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

Life.....so fragile, Loss....so sudden, Heart....so broken,... in the wake of such a loss,
we are haunted by things we don’t, and
may never, understand.

Yet the solace we seek may not come from
answers. So we look for comfort in the
belief of love's everlasting connection.

May that love lift you and hold you close, and give you peace.
