Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Brian Edward Hayden

Holly, I know your dad is so very proud of you. You kids are all he ever talked about. I remember so many times when we would be going to the woods to hunt on those long cold morning drives. He would talk about his kiddos and break into such a big smile. Or when we would have down time on the job, he would brag about what one of you kids had done. The pain of his loss is as strong as it was the day 04-19-2012. I miss him so much. He was just like my brother I never had. I know he is in heaven and not alone. My mother and my pop are both with him now and I know he would be up there giving them both grief over something they had done. lol...... Brian I miss you brother please watch over us and protect us. I'll see you when I get there brother.

Moving into college in a week daddy! I wish more than anything that you could be there to move me in, but I know you're always with me in spirit. I miss you more everyday and mom keeps telling me how much I am like you in certain ways. I just hope you're resting easy and I am making you proud. Love you forever & always, your little princess.

Not a week goes by that I don't think about calling or texting you about some silly shit that's happened up north. Watts, Boles, Beuke, and I got together last month and told all sorts of Hayden stories. We're all doing well, you'd be proud. I miss you brother.

Hey Buddy, It has been awhile. I am sorry for that. Brother I miss you everyday. I miss getting to work with you, getting to sit those long night and talk about everything that is going on in our city and about our lives. I miss going out in the woods and setting up for a great season of hunting. Just to spend all my time helping you drag out all the deer you would shoot, while I set in the stand falling a sleep and missing the deer. Most of all brother I miss getting to hug you and listen to you tell some crazy story. Love You Brother see you when I get there.

Hey, dude, I just came back from a visit with my uncle in Virginia. My brother and sister were also visiting and we decided to go sightseeing in Washington. I told them that we had to go to the National Law Enforcement Memorial because I knew that your name was on it and I had to see it. I told them all about you and we all found your name together. You are, and always will be, missed.

I'll be heading to Police Week in a few days to hear your name called out as it's added to the wall. I've been there before, but this time it's very different... you'll be a part of it, which just ain't right. I'll bring back stencils of your name so others may have them to remember you by. Looking forward to it, but not in a good way. See ya there bro.

Big Brian,
I can’t believe it’s been a year. It’s so vivid it seems like last week but the amount of times I’ve started to call or text you make it feel like a lifetime. I’ve been here a few times since you left, reading and re-reading all the beautiful comments and memories. It’s taken a while but I think I’ve finally figured out what I wanted to say. 10 years, 1 month and 1 day ago would have been our 10 year anniversary in Egypt, in support of OIF; self-dubbed “Hayden’s Heroes.” You rolled the dice and took a rag-tag bunch of jeep Airmen to a “not involved” county in direct support of a full-fledged war effort. I remember finding out I was on your “bucket” and talking to MSgt Lindsey about how I was scared to have you as a Team Leader, since you had all that experience and were very direct (?). I’d never been your troop before but had a few Hayden ass-chewings in passing, which was enough for a lifetime. However I soldiered on and remember all your impromptu briefings about foreign weapons and lectures about Hussein’s history and family story. I was captivated, we all were, and from then on I knew I’d follow you anywhere, ass-chewings be damned. As the deployment evolved so did the learning. You never let us drop our guard (Forced ruck marches as a show of force) and were constantly teaching and showing us new things (You cut hair and play the guitar, among other things). Eventually at some smoke-pit far far away we became friends. There was a huge mutual respect formed between you and I. From then on we were confidants and dear friends. I’ve got so many memories from then, the Harley’s, the career development, the professional arguments at staff meetings. Some lessons were free, others you allowed me to learn the hard way and reminded me why you were the SNCO. You signed my paperwork as my trainer for my motorcycle endorsement since we’d rode hundreds of miles together and I’ve still got a nice burn spot on my pipes from that scar on your right calf. I deployed then PCS’d while you retired but even from far away you ‘d be there by phone or e-mail to help me out personally or professionally. Once I became a civilian dispatcher and you were an officer we’d talk often about trends and recent events bouncing ideas and theories off each other. You were always there when I needed a sounding board or to vent. Every time I was in OKC you were always good for dinner at the Dixe Dinner and that’s that last place I ever saw you. I remember the last phone call we had, you told me about a pursuit, Sampson, switching departments, and we talked about your daughter’s visit to you and Tabby which you were so excited of. Beuke and Lindy were the first to text me about the accident, they were making sure I was okay, looking out for each other just like you taught us. They were the first I’d heard of it but we went through the phone tree to make sure no one heard from an outside source and to ensure we all had each other to lean on. You cut a path wider than any natural disaster I’ve heard of, we gathered from all over to be there when you were laid to rest. My group gathered the night before and we drank and laughed and cried and hugged till damn near dawn. Stories you can’t fit in a library were passed around. You are our Paul Bunion, the tales larger than life itself, except they’re all true (Trout line at Fam Camp?). It was a somber but light mood at the visitation, you’d have approved. Hugs and catching-ups all around. Point and laugh at everyone’s “uniforms” in their new careers. We held each other and cried during the service, passing tissues, tight squeezes, reassuring glances and a flask for some. Just when we think it’s over and leave town, there’s a stranded motorist. It seemed like a test. Everything you ever taught us boiled down to regulations and treating everyone equally and with respect. Well your boys jumped out in uniform and pushed two ladies in a one-ton flatbed pick-up off to the side of highway. Good thing since all Law Enforcement in the Tri-State area was already in the procession. We left with jet-lag from traveling, eyes red from crying, bellies hurting from laughing, and heads aching from drinking but our hearts were healing. Our hearts are still healing. You’re unforgettable and this will never be an easy day for us. However, I know you’re up there watching and critiquing ensuring our safety and well-being.
I love and miss you brother,

I miss you Brian, my heart goes out to your family but know that they are supported by those you love. When I hear this song it reminds me of you when we were married and how we stayed the best of friends. My thoughts are always with you my dear beloved friend.

Well you and I
We're buddies
And we've been since we first met
Me and you
Well we've sure been through
Our share of laughter and regret

Lord knows we've had our bad days
And more than once we've disagreed
But you've always been a friend to me

You can be so stubborn
There's times I think you just like to fight
And I hope and pray
I live to see a day
When you say I might be right

And there's times I'd rather kill you
Than listen to your honesty
But you've always been a friend to me

You've always been
Time and again
The one to take my hand
And show to me it's okay to be
Just the way I am
With no apology

Oh you've always been
And you will 'til God knows when
Yes you've always been a friend to me

To Brian & Family...Brian was my supervisor when I was on active duty at Tinker AFB, OK from 1995 to 1997. Brian was a great supervisor and you always knew where you stood with Brian. Brian was one of the first individuals to help me focus my attention to serve as a civilian police officer. Even though I didn't keep in touch with Brian after active duty life, I still remember my time as his "troop". I'm saddened by the loss of Brian and may God give his family comfort and hope in the days ahead. I also rejoice to hear that Brian was a believer in Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Thanks Brian for all the memories.

I just wanted to drop in brother. I miss you everyday around here. Some times it is tough but I remember all the good times we had. I can still sit in the office and think about all the laughs and temper flares we had in there. I can still see us cutting the reports out next to each other fighting over who was going to get to print what first. Looking up suspects or planning how we would catch our next criminal. I still hear your words "hey did you get a pay check, well there you go." lol...See you when I get there brother, until then help watch over all of us. Love ya.

I was just thinking about him the other day. Strange how seemingly disconnected moments can can tie into other memories. Anyway, Brian was one of my two FTO's and he taught me a lot. I still fall back on the nuggets of wisdom the passed on to me during our time serving together. He always called it like he saw it, even if it ruffled other peoples' feathers, but that is what I appreciated most about him. He didn't pull punches and you always knew where you stood with him. He was a great cop and I still feel his loss today.

Though I never knew him, he was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace through such incidents. May family & friends feel the presence of the "God of All Comfort" as they endure the distressing days ahead. I join them in their agonizing grief & remember them in my prayers.

Another senseless tragedy
Another day of grief,
Another day of praying
To help us find relief.

Relief from bitter anguish
Relief from rage so great,
Relief from lenient justice
Which continues to seal our fate.

Relief from heartache’s torment
As we continue on,
Oh, the awesome loss of brotherhood
Now that you are gone.

Though our hearts are deeply broken
And our tears forever flow,
There’s a comforting assurance
That now with God you go.

We know that you are welcome
Now at Heaven’s gate,
While meeting brothers & sisters
Who also met such fate.

The family of Law Enforcement
Knows no distance here or there,
And we recall in comfort
You await us there.
