Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jesse R. Browning

I grew up hearing of the sacrifice of Jesse Browning for the good people of Boone County WV. He was related to my family and I believe him to be a distant cousin of mine. I spent 29 years in Law Enforcement retiring as Captain of the Boone County Sheriff's Department and regularly heard his name mentioned from Rodney Miller a co-worker and the last sheriff I worked under. Rodney worked hard to keep Jesse's memory alive and to get his name on the wall.
RIP Deputy Browning you are not and will not be forgotten.

An old, dear, and respected friend told me Tuesday night that you were his cousin, and of your loss. The details that he recalled matched your remembrance here on ODMP. You are not forgotten, and your sacrifice is honored today. Be advised, we have the watch.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 95th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

How wonderful that your descendants remember you with so much pride, and what a fitting tribute that they will be in D.C. this May when your name is called and your sacrifice honored.

Rest In Peace.

OUR FALLEN HERO---A DAY OF REMEMBERANCE

Next month we will remember and honor our Grandfather Jesse R. Browning. On 04/15/1917 was the day our loved one went to be with the Lord serving the citizens of Boone County, West Virginia. The past 95 yrs. should be a test to us that our Law Enforcement officers will not be forgotten. Someone once said "It was only a moment, but in that moment of madness our lives an the world changed. Hearts were broken and names previously unknown are now spoken with reverence. The moment passes, but in that moment we mourn for the life that was taken and grieve for the family survivors. Remembering the sacrifice made to protect and serve. It was only a moment-but he is gone, a sacrifice made to give us a future. We pause in our sorrow reflecting what might have been-but then we press on for, by the grace of God, his memory still stands. Amen

In May of this year, some of the family members will travel to Washington, DC to honor Deputy Sheriff Browning at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. A candelight vigil and memorial ceremony will be conducted while they are there, along with a memorial wreath will be placed where his name will be etched in stone at the wall. Grandpa, this is a small token of what we can do to honor the service and ultimate sacrifice that you gave to all of us. God has blessed our Browning family, I believe your sacrifice could be the reason. May you continue to rest in peace.

As a great grandchild of this man, I am proud that the honor is finally being bestowed. My grandmother was only 3 when her father was killed. I know she greatly missed his influence in her life as did the rest of her siblings. There world was never the same after this horrible day. It makes me proud to be called his "granddaughter." Thanks and praise is due to this man and his family for paying the ultimate price. In loving memory --
