Reflections for Senior Police Officer Gail Denise Thomas

Oh, Gail. I miss you so much. This is the only picture I have of you. I can't remember the first time we met, but I can't forget knowing you. You're the one who made me want to be a police officer. And this picture of you in my patrol car is going to remind me to be safe very day. I miss you. Wish I could have gotten to see you before you left. I still wish you had adopted me :P I love you, don't forget me up there.

Later this week I will have the privilege of riding in honor of Officer Gail Denise Thomas of the Atlanta, Georgia Police Department, during this year’s Police Unity Tour. Gail made the ultimate sacrifice Tuesday, January 24, 2012. While Gail and I never met I have a good picture of this special woman, after reading the love and pain in the numerous reflections in the Officer Down Memorial Page. A selfless, caring, fun loving woman and mother, who made Atlanta a better place for her having been there. I hope that the sense of loss and pain Gails’s friends and family feel can be eased by knowing that they are not alone. Gail is part of a larger family, the Law Enforcement Family. Although we may not have met, we care and are here for you.

Hey Gail! It's been a long time. Wish I'd gotten the chance to see you before we lost you. You're still here with me. You're what keeps me safe when I'm on scene. I hope that I'll get to come visit you soon. You're always, and always will me in my heart.

What's up Gaily Gail, I hope that you are enjoying yourself.Evertime I pull into the parking lot of the church I often think about our last talk. You know I missing talking crazy 2 u, and seeing you smile. They started two services in the morning and one now in the evening. Thats fine with me, because I only work in the morning and now I can make more money because we are there longer in the morning. Well I just wanted to drop you a few lines to let you know that I haven't forgotten about you. Continue to rest and relax. We will chat again, LORD WILL

We are coming up on one year. We still feel your loss so deeply. The drunk was sentenced the other day, to the max. It served as a reminder of how pathetic human justice is compared to the loss. I wrote this with you in mind.

This Thin Blue Line

The black band, so solemn, so tragic,
Represents so much, that thin strip of fabric.
It bears the memory, the pain, the tears,
Of too many lost over the years.

We don’t have the luxury of falling apart
Not even when grief is twisting our heart.
We bear our grief upon our chest
Wrapped tightly round our family crest.

Polished, shined, to respect, to honor
Bearing scars of friends who went on before.
We hold each other up, lean on one another,
Shoulder to shoulder, sister, brother.

Afterwards we put that black band away
Praying we won’t wear it another day.
This Thin Blue Line may ripple, rumble,
But it will never fall, break, crumble.

Sometimes justice is a damn dirty joke.
Nothing can return what was taken or broke.
Looking through these tired eyes so jaded
Often hope for the future is tarnished, faded.
We know too well sometimes there is no justice
Sometimes all we have is us, just us.

You sacrificed your life to do a job - the one who will miss you most is your daughter. I don't believe anyone realizes what a terrible loss your child must be feeling. We cherished your existance, but need to embrace what you have unwillingly left behind. My former family in blue, surround Jasmine (Gail's daughter) she was all Gail lived and worked so hard for; if you respected and loved Gail, please don't forsake her daughter - she is still in need of comfort.

Gail, my friend and co-worker, I will remember you as you were: REAL and Direct, you paid a hell of a price. Time does heal all wounds, but the mind never forgets. My gratitude for sharing time and space with me and mine.

I remember so vividly the day this happened...living just north of where Officer THomas was killed. I know the danger this point of separation incurs to drivers and stranded vehicles. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a car decide at the last minute to swerve to either 75S or 85N at this point, despite the signage warning them well before that the road splits.

After Officer Thomas was killed I was so deeply saddened - she was described as so caring and well-loved. Her photo exemplified that she was a really nice person, in addition to a respected police officer. A memorial was placed at the site with teddy bears and other stuffed animals and flowers. For a long time, and still to this day, I think of this officer who gave her life so tragically to a stupid drunk driver, and to the dangers our police face every day in the name of public safety and serving us. You all deserve more respect than you get from some people!

Though I never knew her, she was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace through such incidents. May family & friends feel the presence of the "God of All Comfort" as they endure the distressing days ahead. I join them in their agonizing grief & remember them in my prayers.

Another senseless tragedy
Another day of grief,
Another day of praying
To help us find relief.

Relief from bitter anguish
Relief from rage so great,
Relief from lenient justice
Which continues to seal our fate.

Relief from heartache’s torment
As we continue on,
Oh, the awesome loss of brotherhood
Now that you are gone.

Though our hearts are deeply broken
And our tears forever flow,
There’s a comforting assurance
That now with God you go.

We know that you are welcome
Now at Heaven’s gate,
While meeting brothers & sisters
Who also met such fate.

The family of Law Enforcement
Knows no distance here or there,
And we recall in comfort
You await us there.

Hey Gail, I still think of you a lot. I walk into the precinct everyday I see your photos but not you. I miss the times we played jokes on sarge and the other officers and we would just laugh all day. I remember when you were dispatched to those crazy carriage horses that one got out and you said on s1 come get this horse Colley. I rode over to ur location and said that's a big horse it was a Clydesdale. As you were locked in your patrol car. I jumped on the back of the horse and rode off and u just started laughing. I miss u a lot and I love you I keep your photo of u sleeping in the honor guard van in my patrol car, you know sleeping on the job is against s.o.p lol love you and keep us safe
