Reflections for Park Ranger Margaret A. Anderson

Rest in peace Park Ranger Margaret Anderson. My heart goes out to her husband and children. My sympathy and best wishes to Margaret's family and friends and to the National Park Service Staff and their families at Mount Rainier N.P.. We should honor Ranger Anderson's service and legacy, learn what we can from this tragedy, and rededicate ourselves to providing each other support to ensure that we all go home safely at the end of the day. This horrific event brings attention to the fact that Park Rangers are at some level of risk every day in our National Parks in perpetual efforts to protect human life and the great natural and cultural resources of our nation, while providing opportunities for visitors to have meaningful experiences in these special places. Park Rangers selflessly serve in law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical services, fire protection, resources management, visitor services and education, and so much more. Margaret is now a shining example of that dedicated service.

“Of all the fire mountains which like beacons, once blazed along the Pacific Coast, Mount Rainier is the noblest.” - John Muir

Thank you for your dedication to Mnt. Rainier, your steadfastness to your chosen profession, and your ultimate sacrifice to the people and places you were sworn to protect. The loss of your life, mourned by so many, will not be forgotten. Rest in peace Margaret, it is sweet justice that the mountain claimed your killer.

Sometimes we forget that the park ranger with the big smile and ready laugh is in truth a brave and dedicated peace officer. May your spirit join with that of the land you loved and may your presence always bring peace and healing to those who visit the park you loved. Thank you so much for all you did. May your family find comfort in knowing their wife and mother and daughter was well loved and respected.

We were visiting the park on that tragic day. Just moments before Ranger Anderson was taken from this world we saw her for a brief moment. She parked us in the lot at Paradise. We are under no delusions about what could have happened that day if she had not acted so swiftly and bravely. She died a hero to all of us up there that day. Our sorrow for her family and beautiful children is beyond words. Her children have an amazing guardian angel. Thank you Ranger Margaret Anderson.

All of our fallen colleagues' deaths are senseless and tragic and the recent escalating numbers of police officers killed by gunfire - we lost a MN hero (Of Shawn Schneider) this past month to gunfire - is especially troubling. Yet there is something especially horrendous in Ranger Anderson's death in beautiful and majestic Mt Rainier Natl Park - which is a sanctuary we humans and other living creatures seek out in this troubled world. The suspect desecrated this sanctuary and took a strong, beautiful, loving, honorable, and dedicated public servant, protector of all, partner, friend, mother, and loving wife from all of us in this country. May Ranger Anderson's family and friends - and may all of us - remember her in the majesty of that magnificent park which remains - along with her family and friends - a legacy and tribute to her life, service, and sacrifice. I along with my colleagues at the St Paul Police Dpt (MN) send our deepest condolences to Ranger Anderson's family, friends, and colleagues.

We did not know Margaret, but we know Mt. Ranier National Park as one of the most beautiful, peaceful, and spiritually renewing places on earth. I feel closer to heaven there than anywhere else in the world. As one of its caretakers, Margaret's spirit must have blended with that of the mountain every day. I hope that her family and loved ones will come to feel her presence throughout that majestic place, and be comforted. As the mountain is such an important part of our world, we will often remember her and honor her work and her sacrifice. We will continue to love it for you, Margaret.
