7.9 hours of normal day. Final few minutes of sheer hell! No time to think of running ,no desire to turn away. Go into the fire thinking you will exit the other side unharmed day after day. Then one day that fire consumes you and we all stand in praise! Another hero another good life gone at the hand of the fires of hell! We play by the rules in a game with no rules for the evil. We curb our anger at the system we watch our shot as we are a target of their hail of gunfire. And in the end when our day is done one way or another there is another day and another good soul will lay down their life ! Rest in peace and may your loved ones find comfort in your bravery ! and !!

I grew up in national parks. My dad was a ranger, superintendent and retired as a regional director. I don't remember anything this horrible happening to a NPS employee during this time. I am really sad for this family.

I met a female Park Ranger at the 911 Memorial site in Southwestern Pennsylvania where one of the hijacked planes crashed. The Ranger was helpful and courteous but also professional. A group was handing out literature and videos and the 911 crash and she politely but firmly explained to them that it was not allowed and requested them to stop. The Rangers are well educated in the areas they protect and do it with great respect and care for the parks and monuments and the public they serve.

That is why the murder of this fine young Ranger is such a tragedy. God bless her and the grieving family she has left behind. I am sure that the streets of Heaven guarded by US Marines are equally matched with the mountains and streams of Heaven protected by US Park Rangers such as Margaret Anderson.

Rest in peace Park Ranger Margaret Anderson. My heart goes out to her husband and children. My sympathy and best wishes to Margaret's family and friends and to the National Park Service Staff and their families at Mount Rainier N.P.. We should honor Ranger Anderson's service and legacy, learn what we can from this tragedy, and rededicate ourselves to providing each other support to ensure that we all go home safely at the end of the day. This horrific event brings attention to the fact that Park Rangers are at some level of risk every day in our National Parks in perpetual efforts to protect human life and the great natural and cultural resources of our nation, while providing opportunities for visitors to have meaningful experiences in these special places. Park Rangers selflessly serve in law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical services, fire protection, resources management, visitor services and education, and so much more. Margaret is now a shining example of that dedicated service.

Mike Pflaum, Park Ranger/Superintendent
U.S. National Park Service
