Reflections for Park Ranger Margaret A. Anderson

Many thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and co-workers of Ranger Anderson. It is a crazy world we live in...and such a tragic situation! Nobody deserves to be taken from this world this way.

"What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind..."
--William Wordsworth

May you find strength in your loving memories of Margaret in the coming days.

Blessings

Margaret, God Speed our dear Sister in Arms. You are a true Warrior and a Hero both in your professional life and in your personal life. I have heard only wonderful things about you from people in the North East and National Capital Regions. Everyone talks about what a kind person you were and yet how strong you were. What a great combination. I wish I could have known you in this life.

To Eric and your little girls: May you all find comfort in knowing how much your Dear Wife and Mother was loved and respected by so many people that came into contact with her. My heart breaks for you all and I can not imagine how you must feel that she was TAKEN from you. Many prayers for comfort will go out for you in these next couple of days as you say fairwell to her physically. I know you will never say fairwell to Her spirit and Love which will live on in your hearts and souls for the rest of your lives. We will never forget her ultimate sacrifice and she will never be forgotten.

To Margaret's parents: I can not imagine the pain of having your beautiful daughter so tragicly taken from you. May God be with you to help you through these hard times. Thank you for giving the gift of Margaret to this world, she was a wonderful blessing to so many. May you also find comfort in knowing how many lives she made better just by being here.

To Margaret's family and friends: Many prayers for comfort in these hard times.

We were deeply saddened to hear about the death of Ranger Anderson. We know how difficult it must be for all who knew her (family, friends and collegues). The Anderson Family is in our thoughts and prayers. We know how much Margaret will be missed. I encourage you to draw on your strengths and the strength of your family and friends. She will for ever remain a Park Guardian.

It is clear from the many heartfelt comments that Margaret was kind and dedicated, a special person we all would like to call our friend. It is hard to find the words that could be of enough meaning to express my deepest sympathy for Family and Friends at this time over this tragedy. You can not replace such a deep loss, but we pray for the strength to keep going, knowing the memories and the love continue.

Ranger Anderson's tragic death reminds me of the line of duty death of Officer Jayme Biendl, Washington State Dept. of Corrections, EOW 1/29/11 She too was just 34. As we in DOC remember the anniversary of Jayme's sacrifice, our hearts go out to you in the National Park Service as you mourn Margaret's loss. We are all brothers and sisters in the public safety field, and we all know what it is like to lose one of our own. Lest we forget. Rest in peace, Margaret and Jayme (and all of those in law enforcement who have given their lives). We have the watch from here.

I believe many people would agree. Not only did your actions save many other people from great harm, but they saved The Mountain and the park's innocence. Thank you. I will not forget.

From the pen of President Abraham Lincoln written November 21, 1864,
“…….I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic (she) died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln”

For nearly two decades I lived in the shadow of Mt. Rainier and played on her slopes and trails. At first as a soldier at Ft. Lewis then later when I worked for WA State Parks. The sight of Mt. Rainier in the distance on a sunny day was always reassuring that God himself touched this place. Now, as a Park Ranger myself, I know the dedication that was in you Margaret to protect the park from the people, the people from the people, and the people from the park. It's not a job, it is a calling. Thank you for your selfless service and sacrifice. You are a true hero.
