Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Peter John Figoski

Dear Peter, I was rookie cop in the 75 when I met you. I will always remember the time you took to give a smile and kind word to a young man like myself entering law enforcement. I am hurting inside and the crying ever since I heard the news. I will miss you my friend. Though many miles away from the 75 pct, I will never forget you. Thank you for helping make me the officer I am today. God Bless you and your Family.

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

"He Answered The Call"

Today in the sun, I bid him farewell
A man, a hero, I never knew well

Like many before him, who answered the call
Wearing a badge, he was destined to fall

Though by choice a long life and a happy old age
Would he have chosen, had he written the page

But the office he chose never promised long life
Just half of his salary, for his child and his wife

He went without fear, into the darkness of night
Bringing comfort to some, to some others light

Easing their pain and calming their fears
He did his duty, never asking for cheers

A husband, a cop, he answered the call
We bid him farewell for he gave his all

I was working one borough away in Manhattan when I heard the level III mobilization come over the radio, the dispatcher saying an MOS had been shot in the face. I was in shambles for the rest of the tour, not knowing your name, but hoping you'd be okay. It was not until my ride home from work that I heard on 1010Wins you had passed. I began to cry right there. I never knew you, but I bleed blue and have had trouble sleeping ever since. It truly could have been any of the over 30,000 of us that day. I'm staring at my Class A's this morning, waiting to bid you farewell in what will likely be the largest send off if NYPD history. I swear on all I love in this world, you will never be forgotten. Not by me, not by your entire family in blue. We will all be here for your family and four daughters forever. From this rookie to you, old timer...rest in peace.
