R.I.P my brother. I did not know you, but for you to retire and still continue the path of blue, you must have been a hell of a guy. Why someone would take your life with the intent of taking their own right after will never make sense to me. They could have just taken their life and situation over. My heart goes our to your family, friends, and the rest of the Deputies that now have to mourn over and memorialize your life. Thank you for your service, we have the watch now.

To D.S. Rhyne's precious Family:
I am crying and my heart is heavy. There are no adequate words for this. He must of been a wonderful man, just seeing his picture you can tell. All those years providing safety for the public... it shouldnt of gone down like that. May you all get thru this as a family everybody has their different way of grieving. I lost my husband at a young age so I can feel the pain. He is and always will be my shining light. I am so sorry.
To D.S. Rhyne:
May you punch a hole thru this world to let your family know that you are safe and guiding them. I felt my husband did it for me so I just KNOW that you can do it as well.
I am so sorry, and I salute you, Sir... GodSpeed.

Your passing brought to mind a similar incident involving a family friend (Lt. Dennis Sheffield) in Montgomery County in 1984. (I had moved out of Moore in 1983 to attend school in OH.) My thoughts and prayers are with the family and with the Moore County Sheriff's office. May God be your strength and comfort during this very difficult time and may He enable you to carry on.

I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear of the murder of this police officer. That Deputy Sheriff served so many years in his community, an unsung hero. He sacrificed so much, so much that no one but people in the policing community will ever understand. You will never be forgotten. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and co-workers. A hero in life, not death. RIP Officer Rhyne.

Damn, that is one of the most senseless murders of a LEO I had ever heard over frigging child support. Love to see the media say the suspect was a loving parent on this one. Can’t this world just lay low for the rest of the years and keep all our LEO and Service personnel safe through the Holidays. God Bless!!

I am so sorry for your loss. What a hero he was. I lost my dad back in 1966. He was also shot in the line of duty and killed on June 2. I was just a lil fellow, but when I hear of this happened to other officers. It always crosses my mind. Thanks for all the hero's that puts their life in harms way. But I know that to be absent from the body, he is in the present of the Lord!! I will keep the Rhyne Family in my prayers, God will give you grace during this time.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!
"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To family & friends of Rick; my prayer is that this poem I wrote will comfort you. It is: FALLEN HEROES - From the time I was conceived God had for me a plan. He wanted me to get involved to help my fellow man. I know some were against it but God knows what is best. Since the day He took me home I've had perfect rest. Heaven is so beautiful I'm walking streets of gold. Now I'm serving others including saints of old. I know some still have anger about the way I died but God and I both have seen the many tears you've cried. As difficult as it may be please don't hold a grudge. Remember this my loved ones God alone will judge. Please don't be sad and mourn for me I'm doing what I love; serving God and guarding you from heaven up above.

When the Lord was creating peace officers, He was into His sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."
"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day."
"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, May I see what's in there, sir?" (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of his head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, You'll be all right ma'am, when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck." The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think?" she asked.
"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keeps its sense of humor."
"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crimes scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear." What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," he said.
