Reflections for Lieutenant Joseph Lawrence Szczerba

It is a tragedy beyond measure when an event of this type takes place. Although the we as human beings can't fathom why an evil heart and mind should be able to destroy the good in mankind, we must trust that God will heal and protect all of those damaged by this senseless loss.

May He also bring a swift and deserving justice to the one who has forever changed and cheated us all so much by his criminal actions and the subsiquent loss of a honest heart and a protecting spirit.

Rest in peace my brother in arms, you will never be forgotten here in the hearts and minds of those you knew best.

It always saddens me deeply to hear of an officer killed in the line of duty. May prayers and love help heal the emptiness for this Officers Family, friends and other Officers who served with him.

It hurts my heart so very much that public servants put their lives on the line everyday and can lose their lives protecting the lives and safety of others. All citizens of every should feel this loss as deeply.

Joe,

Your men and women responded courageously to the call, but of course, they would have followed you anywhere. I know you are proud. It was a true testament to the leader and man that you were. Thank you for all the wisdom and knowledge you shared with me. I already miss you deeply. What I would give to hear you say 385 on the radio again. I am sure you are watching over and protecting us. You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all he's left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see him, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live... yesterday, or you... can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him only that he is gone, or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back. Or you can do what he'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

RIP Sergeant Szczerba
