It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!
"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer McCandless, your heroism will always will always be a shining example of the honor that is your profession. As an Officer of the Law, you never know what the day will bring, but you chose to, as so many others have done, make yourself a shield between the evils of the world and our great society. You left this world, way too soon, but your spirit will forever be imbued with your fellow officers and will always be there to give them strength. Rest easy, sir, your watch is over...

Ryan...
I don't know you...we've never met. Yet--we are bonded forever Brother. Our job, what we do, how we are able to do it...and yes, even the risk that we willingly take--along with the life which we unwillingly give ~ these things are our bond.
Six-years on... You're young in spirit and deed my friend.
Just know that your sacrifice is not, by any means, all for not. Oh sure, yes, the culprit in your passing has been taken into custody and will pay his price. But the true message of your event and circumstances does not come from that my friend.
It comes from the message and the legacy which you leave behind. It comes from those that read or hear, or know of your tragic end. It comes from the bigger reflection that stares people in the eye and tells them that there are those whom lay it on the line and, at times, "give all" so that others my live the life we have in this country.
And so my friend and Brother -- just know, and comfort your family and extended police-family too, that your passing is untimely - yes. But oh my Ryan, it is so meaningful and huge, and so giving. It touches those across the country--even those that are foe. Why? Because all realize how monumental and willing we are as a proud and serving-slice of America to make the sacrifices that we do...
Rest easy Ryan...and for sure, save me a seat. I'll be honored to one day join you and the rest of our bunch whom indeed are His Peacemakers.
Amen to you... Chief Arnsparger
