I Remember Officer Kenner from'79-'85 he was an inspiration for me to join the military and he taught me to respect authority. May the Lord bless his soul in heaven. And touch his family here on earth. I know when I get up there I will see that smile and badge that God gave you for all the good works you done here.

It's too bad such a terrible thing happened to a person dedicating his life to make this community not only a better one, but a safer one. There are no words to properly express the sadness my heart feels for this hero and his family. My prayers go out to you. God bless.

I am never good with words when in comes to times like this, but I do want to pay my respect to a fellow officer who paid the ultimate price protecting the citizens of Bismarck, ND.

As a line says from the poem, A Part of America Died, "His ghost walks beside each new rookies side" I know you will be there for my son, who will be that rookie one day!

Your loved ones, and those close and dear to you are in the prayers of my family.

R.I.P Sgt. Kenner God Bless

I worked with Sgt Kenner occassionally and saw him almost daily for my seven years at BPD. Although the agency is blessed with many outstanding officers, Sgt Kenner was without a doubt one of the most dedicated. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Deb and the family as well as the entire Bismarck Police Department.

Sergeant Kenner will be missed! He was a very honorable, kind-hearted and humble man. Never wanting to boast about himself, you had to drag this information out of him. The Bismarck community lost a good one on July 8th and will not be the same without him. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family, friends and co-workers.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
......Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

"Police Officer's Prayer"

When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.

Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.

Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a police officer today
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
will be buried with him at his side.
Somebody killed a police officer today
it happened in your town and mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost has the beat
on a dark city street
and he stands at each rookie's side.
A cop answered the call
of himself gave his all
and a part of America died.

THE THIN BLUE LINE

Among us, sent down from heaven

Are those that walk a Thin Blue Line, that's a given

Like Guardian Angels to watch over me and you

Are those that wear the uniform of blue

We see them only as traffic stops

We do not call them friends, just cops

We pray we never have a chance meeting

We never pass along a greeting

But they are so much more than this

They simply do not see the world as bliss

But they look into the corners of our deepest fears

They walk the beat, they wipe a tear

They bring a message to our home

When all is not well, and you are alone

They come to us, no matter the need

Handle the problem, complete the deed

They lay their personal feelings aside

They do their job, they have great pride

And if one should fall, among life's things

The badge they wear, turns into wings

(Katherine Raborn)

Lord, bless Steve's family, friends and co-workers. Provide comfort to them in knowing that Steve is with you watching over them. Even though his watch is over here, continue on brother in Heaven.

For Sergeant Steven Kenner:

Our duty as law officers on the street takes us to face many different people and situations. It is with more good fortune than skill that most of us reach retirement. The odds that we might suffer serious injury or death before then collectively remains low, but neither our assignment nor our location guarantees us our safety. We regret learning that our brother Steven's fate would be to forfeit his life for the safety of others. He stood before us as an shining example courage and of what any law officer's fate might be tomorrow.

We pray for Steven's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.

We are proud to render Sergeant Steven Kenner, a proud and noble soldier of the law, a final salute.
