In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain; but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.

God has added another Angel to heaven in the form of Deputy Pagerly. May he rest in peace and now guard and protect his family, friends, and fellow officers from heaven. An officers goal after every shift is to go home and when one doesn't, it's felt by all. His family and all who knew will be in my prayers and I thank him for his dedicated service.

Words cannot express the disbelief my husband and I felt when we heard the news of Deputy Pagerly's passing. My husband was Deputy Pagerly's First Sergeant in Kosovo, and then they served together again in Iraq . My husband described him to me as a top notch soldier. A soldier that took his job very seriously and gave 110%. The kind of soldier that would do anything and everything that was asked of him, and was tough when he needed to be, and kind when he needed to be. A man that would have moved up through the ranks quickly if he had chosen to make the United States Army his career. A soldier to be proud of, a son to be proud of, a husband to be proud of, a friend to be proud of, and a man to be proud of. It sounds like he gave this same dedication...this 110% in his fire fighter work and in his work as a deputy sheriff. Pagerly Family, there really aren't any words than can convey appropriately what we wish we could say to you. I understand that there really isn't any comfort right now. But please just know that Kyle was an exceptional young man. Truly an honor to serve with and know and observe his growth as he followed his career path. And during these difficult days now and to come, may you feel the love and support of all of those who served with Kyle in all his varied capacities and may God's love be with you now and always. Our heartfelt sympathy and much love to every one of you!

Thank you, Kyle
• for protecting our nation by serving in the armed forces;
• for protecting my family and friends in Berks County, PA as a Deputy Sherriff;
• for protecting my sons who live in the township of the fire department with which you served as a volunteer fire fighter.
Our world is less safe without you.
Our souls feel the void of your absence.
But heaven is richer by your presence there.
May your courage be a source of inspiration to us all. May your legacy live in our hearts and be a source of strength to all, especially to our service men and women, law enforcement and corrections officers, and fire fighters – home and abroad.
May God comfort your family and friends.
