Reflections for Public Safety Officer Eric Emiliano Zapata
My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Zapata's family, friends and brothers and sisters in uniform during this most difficult time. He may be gone, but may he never be forgotten. Officer Zapata, you are a true hero, and KDPS lost a good one last night. My heart breaks for your children and everyone that this affects. I know the shock that they are feeling, as I've been in their shoes when a friend of mine was killed in the line of duty in Cass County in July of 2000. I'm sure that Shane greeted you at the gates and welcomed you to the big department in the sky. Thank you so much for your service, for keeping the citizen of Kalamazoo safe for all those years. RIP Officer Zapata~your memory will live on forever.
I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here, at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face
"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years
The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind
I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

"We Remember the Officers"
We remember the officers who changed our lives,
The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.
We remember the officers who always stood true,
Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say "To serve and protect",
For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.
We remember the officers who we never really knew,
Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

I worked with Eric years ago when he graduated from college. He's been a great friend and he always gave you a smile to lift your spirits. Eric had a gentle, kind personality. He loved being a police officer above all else. I will miss him very much. My deepest sympathies go out to his family. They are in my thoughts and prayers.
Peace, my friend.
