"You Don't Know How It Feels"

Out we go each and every day.
families at home, children at play.
We never know when our time is near
the ultimate price, "I love you dear."

Look at me and think what you may,
but in time of need, I'm on the way.
Never failing to do my best,
I'll lay down my life ... to this I attest.

My life for yours, does that seem fair,
ask my family, if you dare.
It's the career I've chose, you wouldn't understand.
It's about helping others when they need a hand.

You beat your loved ones and drive around drunk,
steal from others, act like a punk.
Use your drugs and sell them too,
rob innocent people because they're not like you.

"Gangbangers" to "wanta be's" you all try to fit in,
why do you act that way ... scared of the "pen?"
I'm just doing my job, you wouldn't understand.
Don't want me around till you need help, man.

The pay isn't great, and the hours are strange,
but I love what I do, do you feel the same?
Saving the world is not what it's about,
one at a time, we try to help out.

I just want to go home, my family to see,
try as you may, you won't take that from me.
Maybe not today, but I will see them again.
As I stand with Saint Peter ... and welcome them in.

Today I stood shoulder to shoulder with over 1000 other Officers to say good by to you my friend. Until our paths cross again RIP 54-3 we will take it from here!

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

"We Remember the Officers"
We remember the officers who changed our lives,
The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.

We remember the officers who always stood true,
Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say "To serve and protect",
For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.

We remember the officers who we never really knew,
Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Sergeant Eric Stein's family, especially his daughter. I can't even begin to imagine what they must be going through right now. He is a true hero that made the ultimate sacrifice and for that I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

Just reading through the reflections left so far is a true testament to how he has touched so many lives both those that knew him as well as those that didn't (myself included).

Rest in peace, Sergeant Stein...your sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten!!!

I served as the Robins Chief during the 1970's until spring of 1980. I am also the father of Cedar Rapids Police Officer Timothy Davis who was critcally injured while on duty by a brutal attack on March 29, 2009. Knowing what we have have endured and gone through as we have seen Tim struggle to survive and lead a "new normal" life has been heartwrenching. Consequently, we have some feel for the emotions that Deputy Stein's family, friends, and brothers & sisters in Law Enforcement are going through. Our prayers and support are with them all. God Bless a Man who served his fellow man.

Officer Stein I thank you for your service to all of us. It's hard to explain why such good people like you are taken, however; you will be remembered. May God bless you for your selfless act and I pray your daughter knows that you can watch over her always, and that you will be with her always. It will be hard for her to understand this tragedy, as it is hard for any of us. God bless you all.

I am so terribly deeply sorry. I knew Eric from Tri-County Junior High/High School. He was a fantastic athlete and a very sincere man. I subsequently have worked with him through the judicial system. You always knew he had your back and would do absolutely anything for you. The community of Keokuk County will definitely miss Eric Stein and all that he did for this area. He was a very good man, and is irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Eric.
