I remember working with John while we were assigned to DC/SC. He had a sense of humor that kept you thinking and laughing. Always quick with a joke and to make light of stressful circumstances, but never-the-less approached his job with professionalism. Our brother will be missed; for we are less without him. May the Lord hold you in his arms and provide your family with comfort and peace.
Rest well brother.

I wish that I had the opportunity to know Deputy Marshal John Perry. I work with hundreds of his law enforcement partners and friends on a daily basis, and can only say that I am deeply saddened by this loss and I am eternally grateful for his dedication and service to the United States of America. I have a special place in my heart for all of our fallen law enforcement officers, and wish that one day we could live in a world where no one would have to endure such hardships. Until that day, I will forever be in support of those who uphold the rule of law. Thank you, Deputy Marshal John Perry for protecting our country, our constitution, and our families.

I had the privilege of working with John for over five years. To know him was to like him. He was quick with a smile and was always willing to help. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy...but he leaves it far too soon.
Things like this are never supposed to happen. We know this line of work has inherent risks. That's why we have vests, guns, etc....but this still isn't supposed to happen...and especially not to John. I always felt a little safer when he was in the stack with us going into a house in search of a fugitive.
The funeral motorcade left the courthouse on Sunday and rolled slowly west along Market street. Marked squad cars blocked every intersection along the route with their red and blue lights flashing, the officers out of their cars, saluting. The motorcade must have been a mile long.
Outside the FBI building a crowd stood in support as many of them held flags and signs. One boy held a homemade sign that simply read "HERO". He needn't say more. On the opposite side of the street a guy had been walking his dog...stopped, took off his hat, and placed it over his heart. I couldn't seem to stop the tears.
As we turned onto Grand Avenue, I could see the fire trucks with their ladders outstretched holding a giant American flag over the street below. Officers from dozens and dozens of departments stood shoulder to shoulder as we rolled by. We parked near a contingent of motorcycle policemen. They were from O'Fallon and Overland and all parts in between.
As we walked toward the building we could hear the drone of the bagpipes paying tribute to our fallen brother. Just outside the auditorium an easel stood holding an artist's rendering of John. Is was spot on. Of course it was. It was created by John's mom.
I was struck to see how many people filled the hall to celebrate John's life, but I wasn't surprised. The stories told by those on stage and the respect shown by all who attended couldn't have made a better tribute to our friend and brother. I'm better to have known him. Rest in peace, Johnny. We miss you.

John and I started our careers with the Marshal Service together in 2001 in DC. He was always a smiling face and a ready hand. While he treated everyone with respect, in him it was not read as weakness only quiet self-confidence. The Marshal Service is better for his presence and less without him.
