Avenue of the Fallen

Standing at attention in their class “A“ uniforms, badges gleaming and shoes like glass, are your brothers and sisters of Law Enforcement. All of whom have previously paid the ultimate price.
Today, like many others, they welcome you to this wonderful place. As you march down the Avenue of the Fallen, all eyes focus on you as if to say its ok you’re with your eternal partners. A salute is followed and a tear can be seen on so many faces.
Welcome, you served well.
Now come join us in the ranks, another is coming home.

Dedicated to Ranger Julie Weir,

May your family, friends and Brothers & Sisters in the US Department of the Interior find comfort from Above. For an Officer who gave her life to protecting our parks, animals, and public safety at Federal Memorials, may those close to find some comfort in these words from Helen Steiner Rice:

The Comfort and Sweetness of Peace

After the clouds, the sunshine,
after the winter, the spring,
after the shower, the rainbow,
for life is a changeable thing.
After the night, the morning,
bidding all darkness cease,
after life's cares and sorrows,
the comfort and sweetness of peace.

Rest in sweetness, Barbara E. Calfee

Julie was a sweetheart. She loved hiking and telling tales of her adventures of the different places she had been. She loved the challenges of her job and the places it took her. I once asked her how she could stand moving from place to place every 6 months as a Seasonal Ranger and she simply told me she loved where the job took her. She was extremely dedicated to what she did. I remember teasing her about her packed truck. It was completely stuffed with every inch being filled with something. She ran out of room for her Ranger hat and asked me to mail it to Philadelphia. She passed me a well used box that had several addresses scratched off of it from past mailings, some cash and a roll of Life Savers. I think her hat had been to more places than she had. We hugged on that day and told each other to be safe and enjoy life. I know Julie did to the end. I can see her now in her packed truck heading to her next adventure with her hat waiting for her at the end of the trip. I will miss our hikes and listening to her tales of crazy rescues and places she had been to.

Gunnison County Sheriff's Office
