While we celebrate Independence Day, we should also take a moment to celebrate the lives of those who have gone on before us... the lives that were lost while fighting to keep this country free. Your sacrifice was not in vain, your memory will not fade, your bravery will not soon be forgotten.
Rest in peace brother.

Hey Bro,
I seen your memoriam on the TV Show "Justified" and I just had to see who the hero was. You and I were born in the same year and it is crazy to see that your life was taken from you at such an young age. I can see from all the reflections that you have recieved that you were a good young man and gave it all for your job. I thank you for your hard work and dedication. God Bless your family and the US Marshall Service. I was nice to see TV acknowledge your service and dedication.

When I saw the memoriam, I was so shocked. A fine promising young man near my age just called home by Heavenly Lord.
I feel so sorry for your family & friends, for what they have lost are so huge, can't even put into words.
Thank you, Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller. For your courage, your sacrifices to make this world a better place.
For the first time I prayed, I prayed for your brave soul, prayed for your family. Feeling sad that you were taken from us so quickly.
At last, rest in peace, honorable Marshal. Rest in peace.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Every time I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the officer they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Deputy Hotsinpiller. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. (The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. I can also be found on Face Book.) You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Derek, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Derek's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Derek's life was about so much more than the way he died. Derek will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Deputy Hosinpiller, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been eight years and he's still very much missed and forever loved.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

I normally do not read comments on news articles regarding law enforcement because they tend to incite me... The day Derek gave his life doing what he loved, I decided to read some of those comments. The very first (and only) comment I read said "When will law enforcement realize kevlar vests don't make you invincible?" I was immediately incensed, just so angry! After a sleepless night, I realized there was some truth to this person's statment. Derek's vest didn't make him invicible that day.
What made Derek invincible that day was his spirit...his courage...his strength of character...his devotion to duty...the love he shared with his family, his friends and fellow DUSMS. THAT'S what made Derek invincible that day.
He is invincible still.
Forever in our hearts.

I remember Derek from the mat room at FLETC. He was serious and focused, asked questions and worked his best at applying the guidance he was given. I am not surprised that he was involved in serving warrants so early in his Marshal career. He had true heart and real drive. If you're interested in becoming a Deputy U.S. Marshal you need look no further than Derek to find the example of extraordinary character needed to fill those boots. I pray that in death you will teach us. I pray we will learn new techniques, new ways of thinking and approaching problems; that our eyes will be open to options that save others and make more efficient agents. I pray that those agents will know that they are better and will look back on their lineage with honor and thanks for the sacrifice of men like you.
