I was there that day and the days after making sure your sacrifice was not in vain. I hope we made you proud - it is the very least we could do.

You are not forgotten brother. We will never forget.

Recently viewed a past television episode of "Justified" that honored the memory of DUSM Derek Hotsinpiller, I will never know the risk level endured or the courage it took to perform the job he did daily. I give my condolences to his loved ones and fellow DUSM, rest in peace and much respect to DUSM #4595.

I think of you today, while also thinking of Meredith Legg who has just lost her battle with cancer. Two young souls taken from us far too soon. May you be reunited at Heaven's gates, laughing at the old days and maybe even playing a little 1 on 1. RIP DUSM.

Thinking of you and your family today, brother. It was an honor to know you, and to witness your desire to serve your fellow man. It is hard to believe it has been three years since we last served a warrant together. The time has flown by, but your memory remains alive and well in my mind. Rest easy brother. Till we meet again...

Dear Mrs. Pamela Hotsinpiller, I'm very sorry for your loss and was touched by your remembrance posted for 2013 Thanksgiving. As the father of two young children, I can only imagine the pain Derek's loss brought. God bless him, and your family.

Derek,

Thanksgiving was good, your seat and your Dad's remain empty. Dustin hung his mounted deer on the wall next to yours.

You remain in our hearts. Till we embrace again in Heaven, I still love you "around the world and back again!"

I can't believe it has already been 2 years. I think of you and pray for your family often. You've given us assurance that there is a place better than this, where bad guys never win and heroes live forever. The bravery, courage, and sacrifice that not only you have given, but also your family, will never be forgotten. RIP Derek.

I was watching an episode of the TV series "Justified" which was dedicated to the memory of Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller. The TV show depicts the daily dangers the US Marshal service experience. Even though I am in Australia, I wanted to express my admiration for the courage and dedication of the members of the Marshal service and express my condolences to Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller's family. Somewhere among these numerous pages of heroes, I came across your name and wanted to stop at your page and leave a reflection. Wrap your wings around all of your loved ones and protect them from harm and help them with their grief for I know their pain. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You will never be forgotten.

I read in the USMS Monitor that you sang a John Denver song while on long runs at the Academy. Candidly, I had never heard the song but, I familiarized myself with it after reading the article.
I recently took part in a mud run called the Tough Mudder in Colorado. It's an 11+ mile race with about 25 different obstacles. While on one of the trails jogging along I heard someone I never met start singing that song. I, of course, thought of you. As we jogged along I told her your story and how much you inspire me. I thanked her for reminding me of your service and sacrifice and I hope she found a little inspiration in you to finish the race as well. Thanks again for everything, you are still not forgotten.

My thoughts are with all of your loved ones and close friends as they face each day without you. Continue to keep close watch over your loved ones and protect them from harm. I know how your Mom feels every day for I walk in her shoes. I'd like to leave the following for her to let her know she is not alone:

"The sense of loss does not diminish with time. In truth, the expression 'time heals all wounds' is a myth. For parents, the loss of a child is permanent and mental scar tissue really does not grow over the grim memory. Rather, all tears are expended and a dull ache remains."

The Federal Center in Clarksburg WV was renamed the Derek W. Hotsinpiller Federal Center on Friday 06/08/12, with a ceremony held in his honor. The ceremony was attended by friends, family, colleagues and stretched more than half a city block. Dereks' brother Dustin, an officer with the Bridgeport PD said he and his family had feelings of guilt when told of the efforts to rename the federal center in his brother's honor as though too much was coming too quickly. But he expressed appreciation at the level of community support that has been shown since his brother's death and vowed that after Friday’s ceremony, they no longer want to commemorate Derek's death, but rather to celebrate his life and service to the community.
