Reflections for Deputy U.S. Marshal Derek William Hotsinpiller
Brave, young, dedicated, HERO. Protecting citizens in his jurisdiction. In serving warrants, an Armored Personnel Carrier should accompany the Warrant Team. If the door is not answered, the team backs off, and the house is opened-up with the Armored Vehicle. Enough of this unecessary loss of life. Armored Ambulance should be in position also, to intervene between the gunman and the Officer Down, if possible. A used Armored Coin truck would serve well, to pick up the victim and transport a few blocks to a waiting ALS Ambulance. Used Armored "Car" Money trucks are available. Deepest thanks to Deputy Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller, and his family.

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." George Orwell. Derek was one of those men.
I read this quote on the wall of the D/NJ USMS-Newark office when I was young and knew it was an attribute all deputies possessed. Although I never met him, I know that Derek Hotsinpiller also possessed the above fortitude and more that it takes to be an American Law Enforcement Officer.
Derek, you are truly an American hero and you will be sorely missed by not only those that love you but by all the Marshals Service.

I never had the good fortune to have met you personally. However, my wife is a police officer, and I am a firefighter/medic, so I am very familiar with many in the law enforecement community. I have complete respect and admiration for the risks that are taken by LEO's to protect the rest of us.
My wife attended the same academy in Glynnco, GA just two years prior to you. She knows the joy that you felt as you started on your desired career, and continued your family tradition. Our hearts are heavy after you gave the ultimate sacrifice, giving all for us. Our prayers have and will continue to go up for your family, friends, girlfriend, and fellow officers in blue, for many days to come.
Rest in peace and enjoy your time with GOD and the angels.

You were taken from us on the same date as my husband, although 42 years apart. I feel a special connection to any law enforcement officer who was killed on 2/16. I know your dad and my husband were among many who welcomed you to your place with God. You will never be forgotten, Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller. You were loved and respected as a man, a son, a brother, a boyfriend and a member of law enforcement, who made us all proud. You will be taken care of in heaven and your family will be taken care of here on earth. They will never walk alone.

Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller, you are a true hero in every definition of the word. As many from our agency attended your funeral to honor you, we were amazed at the strength of your family, friends, your long-time girlfriend, your fellow US Marshals and the Bridgeport Police Dept. There was not one person among us without a tearful eye and not one person who will ever forget your selfless sacrifice and dedication to duty. You and your fellow US Marshals are an outstanding, honorable group of men and women. We salute, honor and appreciate your dedication and sacrifice each and every day. Our hearts are aching for you, your mother, brother, girlfriend, friends and fellow US Marshals.
It was Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller’s duty to serve and it is our duty to always remember him, his family and his sacrifice. For those who pledge to uphold it, freedom and safety requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.

I've known Dereck since he was born , he was a great kid and even greater young man. A young man who knew what he wanted and worked hard to get it.
He will be missed by all of us who knew and liked him.
he follwed his Dad's footsteps , as he looked up to him.
Be at peace and may God bless and keep you in his arms.

Thank you, Deputy Hotsinpiller, for your dedication, service and sacrifice. May the Good Lord hold your family close as they pass through these dark days. We lost our son to similar circumstances at your age. We have property near Center Point in Doddridge County that our son loved to hunt. Your death occured, not far away, and brings back a flood of memories, good and bad. Bless all your coworkers, friends and families.
