May the Lord bless this brave man's family, friends, colleagues and all defenders of life, dignity, freedom and justice. Special Agent Zapata was not forced to be where he was -- he chose to be there. He committed himself to his duties; he stood ready and operated in a hostile environment -- all in an effort to positively influence the life of another, if but just one. And one life saved, rescued, rebuilt and reconstituted would have been enough. But SA Zapata accomplished much more: He chose a profession that impacts the lives of millions whom he never knew on Earth. From the school teacher in California, to the rancher in Montana, to the fisherman in Maine, to the truck driver in Florida and everyone from every walk of life across our union, SA Zapata risked his life for these everyday. He willingly walked across the threshold of uncertainty every day for you, for me, for them.

No one nonchalantly becomes a Law Enforcement Officer. SA Zapata answered a calling when he became a Border Patrol Agent and then a Special Agent -- his supreme sacrifice exemplifies the meaning of John 15:13, "No man has greater love than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

One definition of "Hero" defines such as "A Warrior-Chieftain of special strength, courage and ability." Special Agent Zapata, I thank you for your highest service to your fellow man, and I thank your family and friends for providing love and that unique support that only a lawman's family knows and understands. I thank you for being a true Warrior for Justice. You, my brother, embody the hallmarks of a Hero.

SA Zapata reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of Immigration & Customs Enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security and the profession of Law Enforcement.

ICE - HSI
