Reflections for Police Officer Michael J. Califano
I noticed the inscription about the life of this fine officer. Doing things to his best ability still cost him his life. Destroyed his family and friends. I did not know this officer. Do this: The next time you have an opportunity to thank them for their service, do it. At any given time they are putting their lives on the line for all of us. RIP Mike

Officer Califano,
Although I never had the pleasure of knowing you, everyone that I speak to that did know you describe you as the kind of gentleman that many of us hope to be. A friendly personality, A true professional, someone you would want by your side. May you always rest in peace.

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

We retired from Nassau just before you joined but cried when we heard the news. You were a member of the best police department and you gave your life doing what you loved. You will never be forgotten, I tell my students about you every year at this time. God Bless your family!

I can't believe it's been 4 years since I received that horrible call. "One of your guys was hit. It doesn't look good." One I will never forget! Mike, you are missed!

I was Mike's Class Officer when he went through the Police Academy. He was a gentleman to say the least. Upon his graduation we worked together in the 1st Precinct. Always had a smile on his face. Great guy who will always be missed. When I heard of his passing, only minutes after the accident from another member of HPB, I threw my cell phone across the room. What a shock! As a member of the Pipes and Drums we were honored to play at his funeral. Think about him all the time. Rest in peace, my brother. High speed 98-3!

Mike and I started together in the Nassau County Sheriff's Department on 12-16-1988. Mike was a real go-to guy, working in the more difficult areas of the Nassau County Jail. We were all overjoyed when he went to the PD. Many of us encouraged him to make the move. In Mike, the PD got the best we had to offer.
Mike and I were skiing and camping buddies. I was at his wedding. When he went to the Highway Patrol, "Highway Mike" was always in my thoughts. Especially when I was on the highway!
I was immensely saddened when we lost Mike. He died the night of my NCSD retirement dinner. I have yet to recover from the shock. Mike was a fine man, who was taken from us much too soon.

I have read your story before. It is heartbreaking. We just lost one of our Motors (Trooper) here in WA when he was riding up the shoulder for traffic detail and a box truck came over and pushed him into the right guard rail. He fell under the truck. I saw your wife on the Long Island Medium. As sad as it was, it was nice to know you were THERE with your wife and kids. I hope that visit keeps her spirit a bit higher. RIP sir.
