The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and said.
"No, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a Saint."
I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got to steep.
And I never passed a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand"
There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman.
You've borne you burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in Hell"

My husband and I were deeply saddened as we watched this tragedy unfold live on television during a recent vist with my father in St. Pete. The funeral service made this even more personal when we learned that Officer Yaslowitz was a Christian husband and father. Our prayers are with his wife and children as well as with the community. We are grateful for all police officers who face danger daily in their efforts to protect all of us. Although we never met Officer Yaslowitz, we will never forget him and what he stood for.

To the family and friends of Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz and his fellow officers:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Jeffrey was tragically killed.

To Officer Yaslowitz' family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Jeffrey gave to his community and the citizens of Florida, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 24, 2011.

God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain; but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.

Rest in peace.

It has been a week since this terrible tragedy has occurred and it is still hard to comprehend the loss you must feel. Last Monday was the day for you and your family that all family members of law enforcement officers fear. I am so sorry that it was your day. I listened to a recording of your interview on the talk radio station and I was overwhelmed with you deep faith in God. I thank God that you have it for it is the only thing that will truly sustain you through the coming weeks and months. My prayers are for you and your children, especially your five year old son who will never have his Daddy turn his flashing lights on his squad car for him again.

I cannot even begin to tell you how terribly sorry I am, for the loss of these 2 fine men. Being a widow, myself, I know exactly what these 2 wives are and will be facing.

They may be surrounded by 10,000 people BUT they are still all alone. The healing will start with one minute of not thinking of the tragedy, their loss. One minute without breaking down crying. One minute leads to two minutes. One deep breath, one heavy sigh. Unless your spouse has been taken from you, through death, the feelings are something that cannot be explained - only lived through.

May God rest Sgt. Baitinger and Officer Yaslowitz's souls, may He bring comfort to their loved ones.

With deep respect -

I'm so sorry for your loss. That seems so distant and maybe unheartfelt to you, but to me it is truly a feeling that I can't any other way describe. You have given the ultimate sacrefice....your life....My son, David Kimes, usually works this shift, when his wife Rhonda got a job, his shift changed. That morning their baby, Gage, 20 months old was running a temperature and David did not go into work that day. I still can not grasp, from a mother's point of view how your family must feel. I will promise you, Sergeant Baitinger, that I will pray for your family daily, that God will take care of them and comfort them in this time that God chose to take you. Enjoy your time with Jesus and God, I can only imagine what a joyous homecoming you had along with your friend and co-worker Sargeant Tom Baitinger. Til we all meet again.....
