Reflections for Police Officer Larry James Nehasil
As we approach another anniversary of the day this world lost an amazing father, husband, friend and a true hero, I would like Larry’s family to know that Larry and his family are in my family’s prayers EVERY night. I met Larry at Powerhouse gym in Highland, Mi. I was never the type of person to talk to a lot of people at the gym as I was always looking to get in and out, but I always made it a point to say hi to Larry. Larry had a presence to him… he was just one of those guys that you would be stupid to mess with by looking at him (especially with that new tattoo), but at the same time, when talking to him… you would quickly find that he was truly one of the nicest guys you had ever met. As a newly-married guy in my 20’s with a baby on the way, after getting to know Larry, he truly became an example of the man I had aspired to become. A family man, a father, a protector, and an honest to God nice person.
A Quick, yet a little embarrassing story…., when I met Larry, I swore his name was Eric. Not sure where I got it, but I called him by Eric for at least the first month I spoke to him. And Guess what, instead of correcting me, maybe embarrassing me a little, Larry went by Eric…. He never said a word! That’s the guy he was and the guy that I always will remember him as. A guy that gave his life protecting people that he had never met. A guy that did his best to make this, sometimes disgusting, world a better place and for his family and absolute strangers. And a guy I think about every time I step in the gym in order to train hard enough so that when it truly matters, I might be brave enough to fight to the very end the way Larry did. Larry left a lasting impression on me that I will never ever forget. I will forever be grateful to have called Larry (Eric) my friend. I know that Larry is still protecting those he loved so dearly from where he is now as he did on earth, and he will always be one of the very few that I look up to! Larry, thank you for inspiring me to be a better man every day I wake up! You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend!

I'm going to be a senior in college this year, studying animal science and previously aspiring to become a veterinarian. However, Officer Nehasil has inspired me to attend the police academy after graduation and hopefully become even a fraction of the officer that he was. Larry, thank you for being my hero and I will never forget you. And to those who personally knew and loved Larry, I'm sure it was an honor and a privilege.

My faithful servant.
You were called upon to serve others.
You were asked to see, what no man should ever have to see.
To go through, what no man should ever have to go through.
But you did so with pride, honor, and integrity.
My faithful servant.
You were called upon to defend those, who could not defend themselves.
To provide justice to those, who did not respect it.
To lay down your life, if the time called for it.
Again, you did not question what was asked of you.
You did it with love, compassion, and loyalty.
My faithful servant.
In times of adversity, you prayed for strength.
In times of triumph, you praised your Lord.
You served your Country, State, and city proud.
Your service will forever be remembered by the many lives you’ve touched.
My faithful servant.
When your service on this earth is finally complete.
I will welcome you home with open arms.
I will embrace you and proclaim,
“Well done thou good and faithful servant.”
I wrote this when I lost a good friend (Police officer) to a horrible disease (cancer). I think it applies to all law enforcement officers (that’s who I had in mind as I wrote), but it resonates most when we lose one in the line of duty…RIP my brother.

Larry my friend, and brother, it was an honor serving along side you on this earth. Even though we only met a hand full of times, I could see that you were a man, and an officer, of great character. Your infectious smile is sorely missed...until we meet again one day my brother, rest in peace.

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, officer. How shall I deal with You?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Cause those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep,
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I've never expected or had too much.
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.
As the officer waited quietly for the answer of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's Streets. You've done your time in Hell."

To the family and friends of Officer Larry Nehasil, his fellow officers, and most especially to Officer Nehasil:
We honor your service to your community as a police officer and you will always be remembered and revered. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of our entire family, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Officer Nehasil was killed in the line of duty. It is obvious he was well-loved by many and well-respected by his peers and officers as reflected in the loving reflections left for him.
May his loved ones continued to be supported by their law enforcement family and other police survivors. Our family grieves with you and for you. To Larry's family, you are in my heart's embrace today. With the anniversary day and your first Christmas without your beloved, I know this is a very difficult time.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the many years of distinquished service Officer Larry Nehasil gave to his community and the citizens of Michigan, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 17, 2011

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Every time I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the officer they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Nehasil. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. (The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. I can also be found on Face Book.) You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Larry, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Larry's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Larry's life was about so much more than the way he died. Larry will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Officer Nehasil, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been eight years and he's still very much missed and forever loved.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)
