Marshal Bates, what a tough job you had! But, you did your duty, even though you knew the risk. Your name and your commitment are still remembered and always will be. I'm also very grateful for the work of the sheriff and deputy who brought your assailant to justice. Keep watching over us.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 107th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
