A 16 year veteran who entered the traning academy at age 24, I am humbled to think of how the valiant few make the ultimate sacrifice so that many can continue to protect and service. We serve because we choose and want to. We are the thin blue line between chaos and calm. Offer Jillian M. Smith, thank you for a job well done and you will not be forgotten. God bless you and your family.

Words from a stranger seem so meager and cannot dull the pain her family and friends must feel at such a horrible and grievous loss. I can only say that this must have been an incredible display of courage and devotion. To choose at such a moment to place herself in the breach rather than to buy a tactical advantage by ducking or diving for cover is the act of a great and ennobled soul. I hope that somewhere in the whirlwind of grief and loss there may be some ray of comfort in the solemn pride that must surely be yours at being so close to such an upstanding and righteous person. Even in the shock that comes from learning of this awful atrocity, I cannot help but feel hope in the evidence that such people as her can be found in this world.

A promising young life taken too soon. Although i did not know her, i certainly feel a connection to her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. I hope people truly understand the sacrifice she made to protect that little girl and the sacrifices police officers make everywhere. I'm positive she did it without any regard for her own safety. Another hero lost!!

Jillian was always such a kind, warm-hearted, cheerful person... Of all the years I've known her, I don't think a day ever passed that she didn't have a smile on her face... She was a dear friend to me since we were young & it's such a sad thing to see someone so great taken away from her friends & family at such a young age... Jill, you will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. -Ali
