Reflections for Trooper David James DeLaittre

While partisan politics suck up the air out of this country and constituents scream at each other from blue states to red, earnest and hardworking young professionals like Trooper David DeLaittre gas up their patrol cars, slip into their crisp uniforms and set out to patrol our great American highways without any regard for that triviality. Their enthusiasm to live up to stories and accommodations of those who have carried the badge before them never wanes to the left or right side of the political stream.

Tomorrow as the airwaves become infested with trivial stories of million dollars athletes and their sideline tantrums and elected politicians and hollywood stars extort our attention for childish gossip, the body of young Trooper David DeLaittre -- an actual American hero -- is being prepared to be laid to rest.

It sickens me that this nation takes for granted those folks who do the most dangerous and important jobs, often pay the ultimate sacrifice for their diligence and loyalty.

Maybe next time you're driving home on a cold, rainy, icy evening and you see a law enforcement officer on the side of the road standing outside of a vehicle enduring the brutal elements, you might find it important enough to pull over to the far lane. Maybe you might even be thankful that we still have enthusiastic people who -- without a boss looking over their shoulder -- brave the elements, ignore corruption and pursue those who arrogantly break laws like a drunk driver who could be the one fatal blow to your friend or loved one. These public servants -- unlike an ostentatious athlete or numerous and sassy political figures demanding vain recognition -- do their work silently in dangerous and lethal conditions without the petty commendation or silly vanity others demand. They do it out of a deep-seeded respect for decency, community and service to their community.

Maybe you might even find it worthy to remember this when it comes time to vote for the basic tools these people need to do their jobs. May God bless Trooper David DeLaittre and his family during this holiday season.

Another young hero taken from among us to patrol the golden streets of Heaven with his fellow troopers who have gone before him. I know you were welcomed with warm smiles and open arms by each one. I pray that you will join them now in watching over your brothers and sisters left behind to cloes ranks and take over your watch in your absence.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends, the Montana Highway Patrol, and the brothers and sisters in uniform across the State of Montana and the nation. May God comfort you now in the way that only He can.

Rest in peace, Trooper DeLaittre. We will never forget.
