Rest In Peace C/O Chapin. May GOD give your wife and children comfort during this tragic time. Hard to believe your family lost a husband & father over a unsharpened pencil. I know this is the kind of POS's that we deal with everyday we put the uniform on and do your job. May Justice be served and the full force of the law come down on this POS!!!!

The unthinkable has happened here. We as Corrections Officers go to work each day with only one intention... Going home after our shift. Gary is an unsung hero that didn't get to go home. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew him. Let us all not ever forget the sacrafice that Gary made in the line of duty. Lay blame not on the job that he did but on the system that he did it in. Rest in Peace Gary.

With all the respect and honor due Officer Gary Chapin and heart felt condolences to his wife and children. We come from more walks of life and nationalities that are not easily counted. Most of us born into this line of work due to recent economic problems. We work our duty stations wanting to make a better life for ourselves and our families, But with as much pride in what we do as any other trusted servant standing a post any place on earth. We are fathers, mothers sons, and, daughters. Brother’s sister’s aunts and uncles. We forge a bond with our co-workers harder than Pennsylvania steel, us against them, two sides of the gate, all of that very true, painfully true. A brave man died doing his job, what he knew to be the right thing to do. sometimes we find out in the coarse of doing our job just how lonely it is, in a block or pod with close to a hundred inmates when a guard is attacked we find out how alone we really are, help is a thousand miles away when it hits the fan and seconds become hours because our line of work has us spread so thin. CO Gary Chapin has a picture in out training room, a graduate of state training in 07. his picture that has stood on the wall and barely noticed now will become a very important part of officer training. Because no matter how much we talk about what can happen in the day’s labors, Officer Chapin lived it and sadly gave his all in a job he believed in. Always missed but never forgotten by the staff at the Erie County Prison. Remember Carpe Diem.

To the family and friends of Correctional Officer Gary Chapin and his fellow officers:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Gary was tragically killed.

To Officer Chapin's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. To his parents, I share your anquish in losing a beloved child which is surely life's greatest sorrow, and I hold you in my heart's embrace. Gary will always be honored and revered.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Gary gave to his community and the citizens of Pennsylvania as a police officer, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on November 15, 2010.
