Reflections for Police Officer James M. "Jimmy" Johnson, Jr.
Lord Jesus, as we watch America’s Peace Officers succumb to the wicked and evil in this world, Shot and Killed in the Line-of-Duty, it becomes difficult for us to pick up and move forward. Our communities are on the brink of exploding with tension. In light of the peace officers who are no longer with us, I pray for endurance for our communities and law enforcement agencies. Carry us through this time of strife, that through our struggles, our bonds may grow even more unbreakable. In Your mighty and holy name, I pray. Amen.
Holy Scriptures on Law Enforcement’s Mission:
“For the policeman [peace officer] does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you don’t want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman [peace officer] is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he [the peace officer] will have you punished. He [the peace officer] is sent by God for that very purpose. Obey the laws, then, for two reasons: first, to keep from being punished, and second, just because you know you should.” [Romans 13:3-5 TLB]
[Jesus Said,] “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13 ESV]
And he [Jesus] said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” [Luke 23:43 ESV]
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons [children] of God.” [Matthew 5:9 ESV]
“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” [Isaiah 6:8 ESV]

Wasn’t a truck the suspect was in, but people will put what they put. He also, only received those medals on March 17, 2005.

I had not heard of 'Jimmy's passing until just a few months ago now. I was deeply saddened to hear that after his long struggle he crossed on over. My deepest heartfelt condolences to all of Jimmy's family. You see I met Jimmy late one night just a few shifts before he was shot. My dad was on duty at what was then West Ga. College, and I was riding with him. Jimmy had stopped a car for something, and "it didn't look right to him" and dad was already nearby him, so we arrived within a few seconds to provide any necessary backup. Jimmy wound up having to put hands on and with Dad's assistance got the suspect under quick control and placed in the squad. Later that night, Officer Johnson called dad over the radio and asked his location. Since I was on naval leave at the time, and was not in law enforcement directly, I had to "observe" the earlier arrest. Long story short, when Jimmy (I call him that now because he told me to call him that way back then). When we met up with Jimmy in the College Landscaping maintenance parking lot, dad introduced Jimmy and me. As we stood outside the patrol cars talking for during some late night down time and enjoying a cup of coffee, Jimmy invited me to maybe do some ride alongs with him if I was going to be home long enough. After our conversation and we were all in our respective areas, dad told me that, "unless something happens, that young officer is one you should get to know." Dad spoke very highly of Jimmy and his eagerness to serve and protect. I did get that ride along in the next night if memory serves as it was again late at night and I think I was in his patrol unit for about a half hour or less before he got a call and I got out and returned home. I remember getting a letter a few days later from dad telling me about Jimmy having gotten shot and that he, (at the time) was likely going to be paralyzed. To wrap this up, I finished my naval hitch and as soon as an opportunity came, I too became a police officer. It was not long after the academy, while I was riding with my Training Sgt. Jimmy came to visit. He remembered me instantly and had that infectious grin come across his face. After the usual pleasantries, he turned very serious and said to me, "Tommy, I hope your career is long and exciting, but, please, don't make the mistake like I did." After a few moments more conversation, he left, and we returned to our duties. I saw him a few more times after that in various places around, and I was very excited to hear and see him back in uniform and saddened to learn that his injuries were going to prevent him from living out his lifelong dream. It was Officer James M Johnson that inspired me more than anyone else to become the best 'Cop' I could be. Mistakes, oh yeah I made a few but, my career was made more complete by having met and getting to know him. May he rest in peace and may he now look forever down from his precinct upon all the men and women of law enforcement.

Just thinking about you today. I saw Ms. Jane the other day at the golf course. We talked about golf and, of course, you. I can't wait for May to come around so I can fly your flag on my bike again. It has been my honor to fly your flag for Ms. Jane in your memory for the past two years. I will continue to post it for as long as Ms. Jane will allow me to.
Keep a watchful eye on us. The world is falling apart and we have been put in charge of keeping it together. We need all the help we can get!
See you soon bro!

I have tried several times to put into words what you meant to me. As I began to write each time, I was overwhelmed with what your death did to me. You were so much a part of my world that when you left me, my world was turned upside down. Each time I wanted to quit and not go on, I heard your words telling me that I could do it. I can now say, after almost two years, that I can now do it. I still hear your words and feel your presence and know that the love we shared was more than either of us ever realized. I know that you are with God now and that you are no longer in pain or suffering. I miss you so much but I know that you are happy and walking on streets of gold. I'll always remember what you said about the vacation - I'll never forget. That's a promise.

To Officer Jimmy Johnson, to all family members and friends who call him beloved, and to his law enforcement family:
I was sorry to learn of Jimmy's death and extend my sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you have suffered. Words are insufficient to describe the sadness I feel for the Johnson family. May you find comfort in your faith and the support of the law enforcement community.
There are many police survivors who share this same journey with you, and that community will be there to support you. Jimmy's memory will be forever honored and revered.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Jimmy gave to his community and the citizens of Georgia and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 26, 2010, and for those times in the long intervening years between his injury and his eow day.
