I want to echo what my cousin Kate said with one correction: your brother William was 16--nearly 17--at the time of your passing. He was my grandfather "Poppy," and he was THE man in my life during my early years. (My dad, his son-in-law--later to be a Texas Highway Patrolman--was at war overseas.) Poppy was a proud Texan, and he passed the love of his native "land" to all his children. I am certain there was no higher service in his estimation than that of Texas Ranger, and I am equally sure that this was because of your example. It's a comfort to me to know that you, your mother and father, my grandparents, and my mother and father all share a final resting place in the Hico Cemetery.

Thank you for your service.

Walter Lee:

Your little brother William was only 7 when you drowned in the line of duty. He lived to be 79 years old and had three children. His oldest was my grandfather. As I was growing up, the family kept your memory alive through stories about you and your service as a Texas Ranger. There was always a great deal of pride and respect when your name was mentioned. Our family is grateful that your service and supreme sacrifice has been formally acknowledged so that when the last of us is gone, your contribution will not be lost to the ages.
