God bless you guys in Greene County. As realistic as we in this business know an outcome like this is, none of us are ever prepared for it. Time never truly heals those wounds but cherish the memories of your lost for in those you will find comfort in the difficult times that are to come. You folks have friends in Buncombe County...let us know if we can do anything for you......

Sgt. Jonathan L Scruggs
Buncombe County Sheriff's Office

When I first heard the news that Willis (that's what I called him) was killed in the line of duty I could not believe it. I can't stop thinking about him and some of the times he helped me along the way. I have really fond memories of him because I will never forget the time he came in on his day off to go on a road trip with me to another county which he was familiar with to assist me in conducting a follow up to an investigation. During the road trip he talked about his career in law enforcement and we would always laugh about this one particular time he caught this guy that had jumped out of my patrol car and Willis just happened to be in the right place at the right time and apprehended the guy a second time. It was kind of funny because the suspect actually thought Willis was just someone walking by and he actually stopped and had a brief conversation with Willis and asked him for a cigarette while still in handcuffs. Willis already knew the guy had "jumped and run" when I pulled up to the Sheriff's Office because it came out over the radio. That was one of many stories that I remembered in which Willis actually made fun of me, but if we were on duty the same time he would always assist me if he could because he was also a gentleman first and foremost, and I just want his family and friends to know that he will truly be missed because he was indeed one of a kind. May God bless you and hold you close to Him during this most difficult time.
