To the family and friends of Officer Luke Nihart and his fellow officers:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Luke was tragically killed.

To Officer Nihart's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Luke gave to his community and the citizens of Kansas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on June 26, 2010.

For NR Officer Luke D. Nihart:

Our duties as a law officer, no matter the assignment, harbor a degree of risk. When something as common as a vehicle accident occurs, and claims the life of a law officer on duty, he or she dies as a hero who was in service to the public. We regret that our brother Luke would have to encounter such a fate to earn this title of honor. It remains a hard-earned recognition, but it is also a reminder that each of us on this planet is given another day only by the grace of our Creator.

We pray for Luke's family, freinds, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-kout to one another in the days ahead.

I am proud to render Officer Luke Nihart a final salute.
