It is hard to find any meaningful words when something like this occurs. I take comfort in the fact that Sgt. Bergeron is in a better place, but I also know the pain that those close to him are feeling. It is my hope that the Bergeron family and the Maplewood Police Department find solace in light of this tragedy.

Police Officer's Prayer"

When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.

Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.

Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call... of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died...

Joe, you were a brother, a mentor, a friend. When I first started, I worked for you, and couldn't have asked for a better boss. You guided me down the path I've come. I'll never forget your smile and quick wit. Your ability to joke and talk to anybody, anywhere.

I hope that I never disappointed you.

Will miss you, will never forget!
RIP brother, we stand the watch!

My heart goes out to the Bergeron family. As a sister of a Minneapolis cop, I understand what is is to fear for a loved ones safety and as a friend of the Crittenden family I understand the shock and grief. Though words could never do it justice, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you will always find comfort in knowing how much he was loved and admired. It truly takes a special person to put their life on the line to protect others the way Joe did every day. You are in our thoughts and prayers, God bless you.
