I met this treasure of a man for just a few hours in December 2009. He was one of a few Franklin County detectives in my city following leads in a murder. When I met him he had been going for almot three days and was dressed like a man of his generation. In just a few short moments; I knew this man was a cop's cop, a man to be respected, with amazing integrity, clear focus, a walking living breathing textbook. He was a clear leader and someone to be admired. I watched as the person who he was speaking with challenged him, I stood across the room and watched him straighten up and a look come across his face, the look of something I can only hope to be someday, a great cop. His willingness to still serve after 54 years is something no one in todays world will ever accomplish. I hope his son and family know that the loss to them and to law enforcement is great, almost immeasureable. Jerry Crabtree was a great cop and I am a better for having known him, even for a brief evening.

I can only hope that I can serve as long as Investigator Crabtree has. It is an inspiration to us all. It is not how he died that made him a Hero, but how he lived. Rest in Peace, your work here is finished, and we will carry one the fight.
